External Co-Lecturer – ‘The Loving Brain: The Neuroscience of Relationships’ – DIS Stockholm

Co-teach undergraduate students from North American universities who are spending a semester studying in Stockholm, Sweden. The course ‘The Loving Brain: The Neuroscience of Relationships’ draws upon theories and research in neuroscience to address questions such as: What is the nature of love?; What is the evolutionary function of social connections?; How are cultural differences in valuing independence linked with differences in brain activity and social relationships? Course instruction would be shared with another DIS instructor.

This course includes a 3-day Study Tour to Malmö, Sweden and a 6-day Study Tour to Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia during the semester. The purpose of the tours is to offer experiential learning opportunities and introduce diverse perspectives on the interconnectedness of history, culture, and neuroscience in human relationships.

Tasks

  • Develop, prepare, and refine course curriculum, content, materials, and methods of instruction (note that materials from current syllabi are available to new instructors)
  • Deliver interactive lectures, lead academic visits throughout Stockholm, facilitate classroom discussions, and coordinate with guest lecturers as needed
  • Plan academic activities and facilitate a 3-day Study Tour to Malmö, Sweden and a 6-day Study Tour to Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia
  • Evaluate and grade student work and provide feedback in a timely manner

Relevant skills and knowledge

  • Master’s degree in neuroscience or related field is required; PhD in social neuroscience or related field is preferred
  • Work experience from your field of expertise
  • Excellent academic English and capable of teaching in English
  • Interest in instructing undergraduate-level students from North American institutions
  • Ability to be legally employed in Sweden (this position does not come with a work visa)

Teaching Requirements
This is a part-time position, so faculty are welcome to continue their full-time work while teaching. Faculty are expected to work 5-8 hr/week at DIS with the following breakdown:

  • Teaching: 80 minutes, 1-2 times per week (in coordination with the co-lecturer for the course)
  • Preparation and grading: 3-7 hours a week (shared with the co-lecturer for the course)

Start Date
The Spring semester runs January 16, 2025 - May 7, 2025. Training and onboarding is planned on an individual basis. There may also be an opportunity to continue teaching the same course in future semesters.

Student Profile & Teaching at DIS

Most students enrolled in the Loving Brain: The Neuroscience of Relationships course study neuroscience or psychology at their North American university, though disciplines might expand beyond this. Students are typically in their third year of university. Courses are all taught in English.

Pedagogical support, training, and mentorship is available at DIS through the Learning Lab and experienced faculty; faculty are encouraged to collaborate with academic support staff in various professional development opportunities.
