Description
Galileo End-to-End System Architect in the Galileo 2nd Generation (G2G) System Engineering Unit, Galileo System Procurement Service, Galileo Programme Office, Galileo and EGNOS Programme Department, Directorate of Navigation.
Galileo is Europe’s global navigation satellite system, providing a highly accurate, guaranteed global positioning service under civilian control. Galileo is already the most precise satellite navigation system in the world and the largest European constellation of satellites, with a base of four billion users.
The G2G System Engineering Unit oversees the definition and specification of the new Galileo system releases – gathered together under the title “Galileo 2nd Generation”, or “G2G” – responding to a new generation of demanding mission needs in terms of position accuracy, availability, integrity, assurance, and emergency response. This encompasses the definition of the new Galileo 2nd Generation satellites – with the first batch being under development – and the necessary updates of the ground segment and the interface with service facilities and external entities.
The first Galileo 2nd Generation satellites are expected to begin joining the constellation in 2026 with the Ariane 6 launcher and will revolutionise the fleet and the Galileo services with enhanced capabilities. The G2 satellites will use electric propulsion and intersatellite links and will host a more powerful navigation antenna, greater numbers of atomic clocks with improved functionality, and fully digital payloads.

Duties
You will be responsible for the definition, consolidation and update of the overall Galileo system architecture. You will work at various levels:

  • Programme level to establish and coordinate activities with the Programme stakeholders;
  • System level to define a functional and logical architecture;
  • Segment level to ensure consistency in the logical architecture flow-down and the physical architecture.

Reporting to the Head of the G2G System Engineering Unit, your tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • managing the definition, analyses and consolidation of the end-to-end system architecture, system behaviour, concept of operations, and system scenarios and use cases. This includes unclassified and classified aspects, including the Galileo Public Regulated Service, for which tight coordination with the Galileo System Security and PRS Team will be required;
  • establishing and maintaining the Galileo architecture roadmap, describing the incremental implementation of the system capabilities through successive system releases;
  • ensuring the derivation and traceability of system requirements and segment requirements consistent with the architecture;
  • establishing and applying state-of-the-art system architecting methodologies and tools;
  • contributing to the analysis of new mission needs and the evaluation of design changes and deviations;
  • interfacing with the Space Segment Team, the Ground Segment Team, the Project Office and the relevant industrial actors in order to ensure a proper understanding and implementation of the system architecture;
  • ensuring a system integration and verification approach consistent with the system architecture;
  • providing regular reporting to project management on all aspects of competence, identifying risks and problem areas and proposing mitigation actions, where appropriate;
  • contributing to the management of the schedule and proposing schedule risk mitigation actions;
  • supporting the relevant Directorate of Navigation working groups, Galileo Programme working groups and boards, as well as user communities, with respect to the Galileo mission, system architectural aspects, mission product definition and synergies with other navigation and space projects;
  • supporting technical interaction with national delegations, the Galileo Programme (the European Union and the European Union Agency for the Space Programme) and the Galileo service operator;
  • coordinating the work of a team of engineers and specialised engineering support from the ESA Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality, and from industry.
