Postdoc in Fundamental Experimental Studies of Turbulence – Volumetric Particle Tracking Velocimetry - DTU Construct

Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU)

DTU Construct is offering a Postdoc in Particle Tracking Velocimetry measurements and analysis of small (dissipation rate) and large (global) scale turbulence. The position is offered at the DTU Turbulence Research Laboratory and PDJF Turbulence Centre of Excellence.
DTU Construct is offering a Postdoc in Particle Tracking Velocimetry measurements and analysis of small (dissipation rate) and large (global) scale turbulence. The position is offered at the DTU Turbulence Research Laboratory and PDJF Turbulence Centre of Excellence.

Within the scope of the project, the Postdoc will conduct groundbreaking experimental work using PTV measurements of canonic turbulent flows, in particular on the turbulent round jet. The measurements are centered around studying both the global flow behavior and the small-scale structure (detailed studies of the dissipation rate and its transport properties). The measurements will be carried out in two separate experiments. The candidate will also support analysis of the measurement data in novel ways to test the validity of the existing theories of turbulence and attempt to synthesize new theory based on the empirical result. The Postdoc will be part of a research group that works on different aspects of turbulence, including theory, simulations and experimental work.

Responsibilities and qualifications
The present position is focused on acquisition and analysis of PTV measurements, for which you will be responsible. The position includes updating and completing the experimental setups, where necessary, to be able to successfully carry out the measurements. You will be working in close collaboration with our instrumentation group and our optics specialist, who will assist with these tasks. Furthermore, DTU Construct has a workshop that can help with constructing parts when needed. You are also expected to work in close collaboration with other Postdocs and members in the group, with a common focus on analysis and obtaining novel results and insights that will be used to increase our understanding of the actual physics of turbulence.

You will also be co-responsible for setting up new and maintaining collaborations with leading groups in different fields. Moreover, you may also be given the possibility to develop leadership skills and experience in co-advising PhD- and MSc-students. Hence, it is expected that you are able to work independently and take ownership of, and responsibility for, the project, to be able to carry out the tasks.

Preferably, you have a PhD degree in experimental fluid mechanics and (highly preferably) a solid background in Particle Tracking Velocimetry. The candidate should also have a solid understanding of fluid mechanics to be able to interpret, understand and analyze the measurements.

The candidate should have:

  • A solid experimental fluids background, preferably including extensive experience with Volumetric Particle Tracking Velocimetry measurements
  • Experience and a general sense of laboratory work and the different challenges that may arise (electrical, mechanical, theoretical, optical etc.)
  • Understanding of optics related to PTV measurement
  • Experience and proficiency with big data handling, parallel processing, GPUs (e.g. CODA) and analysis of extensive datasets is advantageous, although not necessary.
  • Experience with DaVis software and methods such as Shake the Box and VIC# is advantageous, although not necessary.

Flexibility and self-motivation are desired skills at DTU. In addition, we expect you to be interested in collaboration and to take personal responsibility for the assigned tasks.

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).
