DTU Tenure Track Assistant Professor in Metabolic Brain Imaging using Hyperpolarized Carbon-13 MRI – DTU Health Tech

Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU)

We are looking for a highly qualified candidate for an assistant professorship (Tenure track) within hyperpolarized 13C (carbon-13) brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This position will allow you to build a career as an independent scientist within MRI with own project management in a team of passionate and ambitious researchers.
We invite applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the field of hyperpolarized 13C (carbon-13) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This position provides an exceptional opportunity for an emerging academic to establish and lead an independent research program while contributing to a collaborative and innovative environment.

About Hyperpolarized 13C MRI
Hyperpolarized 13C MRI is a cutting-edge medical imaging technology that enables non-invasive metabolic imaging of the human body. The field is experiencing rapid growth at leading institutions worldwide, with numerous clinical trials underway that highlight its potential in diagnosing and planning treatment for a wide range of diseases. Its non-invasive nature also allows for unique studies in healthy volunteers, particularly in understanding brain metabolism.

About Hypermag
Our research center, Hypermag, is at the forefront of hyperpolarization in magnetic resonance. We engage in a broad spectrum of research activities, from the development of polarizer hardware to hyperpolarized NMR of pathogens and pre-clinical MR imaging with research programs aimed at using hyperpolarized MR to study metabolism in large animals and humans. As an interdisciplinary team, we are united by our commitment to developing technologies that have a lasting impact on patient care and human health. Situated within the Department of Health Technology (DTU Health Tech) at DTU, Hypermag plays a pivotal role in advancing the department's mission of enhancing human health and well-being through innovative technology.

Responsibilities and qualifications
The brain is a highly metabolic organ, and metabolic impairment plays a central role in most brain diseases. A better understanding of “baseline metabolism” of the healthy brain can therefore potentially both expand our knowledge of healthy brain mechanisms, such as memory and aging, as well as guide preventative measures, diagnosis, prognosis, and monitoring of treatment response for patients.

With the clinical MR scanner available at DTU, this provides the opportunity to apply hyperpolarized 13C MRI for an unprecedented picture of brain metabolism. With the new scanner, we need to build up local protocols, ethics, and strategies for both pre-clinical imaging and for imaging of healthy volunteers building on experience from national and international collaborators. You will be an active contributor in this regard.

We expect you to have strong experience within the field of MR imaging and spectroscopy and to have practical experience with MR sequence development and MR scanning on a GE scanner. Experience with hyperpolarized MRI and multi-nuclear MRI is a pre-requisite.

As an Assistant Professor at Hypermag, you will:

  • Lead and develop your own research program in hyperpolarized 13C MRI.
  • Collaborate with a team of dedicated researchers on pioneering projects.
  • Contribute to the teaching and mentoring of graduate students.
  • Seek funding opportunities and publish high-impact research.
  • Play a key role in advancing our center’s research goals and expanding our international reputation.
  • Drive the above-described research field towards clinical translation

You must be responsible for the teaching of courses. DTU employs two working languages: Danish and English. You are expected to be fluent in at least one of these languages, and in time are expected to master both.

As formal qualification you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) in MRI, medical imaging, or a related field.

Specifically, we expect:

  • A strong track record of research excellence and publications
  • Demonstrated potential to secure independent funding
  • A commitment to teaching and mentoring students
  • Excellent communication and collaborative skills

This tenure-track position offers a unique platform to develop your academic career in a world-class research environment, with significant opportunities for professional growth and leadership.

You will be assessed against the responsibilities and qualifications stated above and the following general criteria:

  • Experience and quality of teaching
  • Research experience
  • Research vision and potential
  • International impact and experience
  • Societal impact
  • Innovativeness, including commercialization and collaboration with industry
  • Leadership, collaboration, and interdisciplinary skills
  • Communication skills

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The position is a full-time position. Starting date will be according to mutual agreement.

The position is part of DTU’s Tenure Track program. Read more about the program and the recruitment process here.
