Your role and responsibilities
You will be part of Powertrain & Digitalization team at ABB Corporate Research in Västerås, Sweden. At Corporate Research we lead the innovation within ABB and our task is to ensure ABB's technology competitiveness now and in the future. We work in close collaboration with other research centers, our business areas: Motion, Process Automation, Robotics & Discrete Automation and Electrification, as well academic and industrial partners. In our creative and highly skilled team we develop, design, build and test new concepts and prototypes of physical and digital powertrains consisting of electric energy source, electrical motor, electric drive, and a selected application. Details: • Period: Jan-Jun 2025 • 30 ECTS per student • Number of students: 1 • Location: On site ABB Corporate Research in Västerås, Sweden Your responsibilities: • Literature study on direct and indirect environmental impacts of replacing Silicon by Silicon-carbide devices • Analytical dimensioning of a grid-side filter, depending on chosen devices and topology of the active rectifier • Simulation (possibly including real-time simulation with HIL system) of selected converter designs • Environmental assessment of selected alternatives • Reporting and results dissemination
Qualifications for the role
- Theoretical understanding and practical experience in modeling of power-electronic converters
- Experience in design of electromagnetic components (such as (coupled) inductors)
- Knowledge of methods for assessing environmental impact
- Good collaboration capabilities in a research & development team
- Strong team spirit and individual leadership to deliver expected results on time and with high quality
