Thesis Work for Stability Analysis and Control of Industrial Grids
At ABB, we are dedicated to addressing global challenges. Our core values: care, courage, curiosity, and collaboration - combined with a focus on diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunities - are key drivers in our aim to empower everyone to create sustainable solutions. That's our story. Make it your story.
This position reports to
R&D Team Lead

Your role and responsibilities
ABB Corporate Research Center in Sweden is located in Västerås, about 100 kilometers west of Stockholm. Together with our colleagues in other R&D centers we develop technologies for future products and services for ABB's core businesses. A microgrid is defined as a group of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), including Renewable Energy Sources (RES) and Energy Storage Systems (ESS), plus loads that operate locally as controllable entities. Industrial grids can be connected to utility grids or run in island mode, with more renewables the grids will have less inertia and short circuit capability. Demand-supply balance is critical in industrial grids in island mode or weak grids. Since electric power is supplied by electronically interfaced DERs and relatively small synchronous machines, system inertia and short circuit capacity is considerably lower in industrial grids compared to conventional power systems. So, a small change in the industrial grid configuration (e.g., start up or shut down of a diesel genset) can result in relatively large voltage and frequency deviations which poses stability challenges. Details: • Start: January 2025 for a period of 5 months, 30 ECTS per student • Suitable for 1 or 2 students • On site ABB Corporate Research in Västerås • ABB may cover the accommodation in Västerås Your responsibilities: • Evaluate how industrial grids can be designed to be robust in a cost-efficient way • Evaluate how industrial grids can be controlled to avoid instability and maximize the stability margins • Study state of the art related to industrial grids • Model and simulate test scenarios in PowerFactory • Study and analyze the stability and control for industrial grids such as: -How we can maintain a balance between the energy resource generation and the load demands to preserve the stability of a microgrid during the transient events, e.g., faults, switching, etc., by developing control actions to the equipment? -How is the control solution effected by different possible configurations such as grid-connected and isolated forms? -Study and analyze the effective control strategies for microgrids -Develop effective control methods for the transient stability of a microgrid of an electric mine

Qualifications for the role

  • Strong background in power systems analysis, modelling and related stability issues
  • Self-driven, motivated and good problem solver
  • Skilled in at least one of the relevant programming environments, e.g., Matlab, Python
  • The study will be made in PowerFactory, so familiarity with power system simulation software is a plus
