Danish Refugee Council (DRC) is a leading protection agency with a mandate to protect, advocate and promote durable solutions for displacement affected populations. DRC has been operating in Ukraine since 2014, currently DRC employs over 800 staff in Ukraine and will continue significant scale-up in 2022 to implement emergency response in the Protection, Livelihoods, Shelter/NFIs and Humanitarian Disarmament and Peacebuilding (humanitarian mine action) sectors, using direct interventions, support to duty bearers and civil society organizations (CSOs), and partnerships with CSOs. DRC will continue and adapt its durable solutions portfolio to the evolving context.

DRC is currently looking for a Protection Assistant (GBV) for its activities in Chernihiv.

This position will report to the Protection Team Leader (GBV).

Overall purpose of the role:
Under the management of the Protection team leader, the Protection Assistant (GBV) will support the implementation activities to prevent and respond to violence against women and girls in Chernihiv oblasts. The Protection Assistant (GBV) will be responsible for providing case management services to women and girls affected by violence. Case management is a structured method of providing emotional support and supporting people to access services. The Protection Assistant will work closely with communities, health services, women’s networks, government services and other organisations to share information about services available and how to prevent violence against women and girls.

Candidates without a background in working with women and girls affected by violence, but who have an interest in the area are encouraged to apply as on the job training will be provided.

The Protection Assistant will be based in Chernihiv DRC office with field activities in the same oblast.

Main responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the Protection Team Leader (GBV), the Protection Assistant (GBV) will:

  • Provide age-appropriate and survivor-centred GBV Case Management services to women and girls affected by violence, including assessment of survivor’s needs; basic counselling; support to develop and implement a care plan; support to develop and implement a safety plan; and support to access services additional services in line with clients’ wishes.
  • Complete and ensure the safe storage of case management documentation, including completing intake forms, referral forms and follow ups.
  • Provide safe referrals to health, legal and psychological and other services as required, and provide accompaniment services when requested.
  • Facilitate and support PSS activities with women and girls.
  • Participate in case conference meetings if required.
  • Provide individual protection assistance/emergency cash for protection to meet urgent needs of GBV survivors.
  • Conduct outreach activities (including awareness and capacity-building activities) with communities in safe and suitable locations.
  • Support assessments to understand the needs of women and girls as required, including leading consultations with women and girls and carrying out interviews with stakeholder.

  • Produce quality reports and documentation on activities and ensure their timely submission to the Team Leader for review and internal information sharing.
  • Any other duties as may be assigned by the Team Leader and/or Manager, relevant to the achievement of protection objectives.

Required experience and competencies:

  • Commitment to gender equality and interest in working in the prevention and response to violence against women and girls.
  • Familiarity with women’s protection or women’s rights such empowerment programmes, reproductive health, counselling etc. is desired but not required.
  • Comfortable in speaking about sensitive topics and working with people in distress.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Experience in Microsoft packages, including Powerpoint and Teams is desirable.
  • Knowledge of English is desirable but not required.
  • Ukrainian language skills.

Required education:
Completion of secondary school, or relevant level of experience required. University study preferred.

Contract length: One-year contract after successful completion of three months’ probation period (renewable depending on performance and funding)

Salary and conditions will be in accordance with Danish Refugee Council’s Terms of Employment for national staff.
