The European Spallation Source (ESS) is a “Big Science” project that aims to be the most powerful neutron source in the world when it is fully operational in 2028. It will enable scientists to study the structure and behavior of matter at the atomic level, opening new possibilities for research and innovation in material science.

ESS invites applications for a Fullstack Software Engineer position at the Data Management and Software Centre (DMSC) in Copenhagen, Denmark. The DMSC is tasked with the mission of assisting users of ESS with all their scientific computing needs. This includes computing hardware, data acquisition, data analysis, modelling and simulation tools for the experiment planning and analysis phases.
About the position
The tasks and responsibilities of the team include but are not limited to:

  • Delivery of critical software that make neutron scattering experiments at the ESS possible and successful.
  • Develop the ESS user portal, metadata catalogue, electronic notebook and more.
  • Gather information and requirements from local stakeholder and integration with other ESS related services.
  • Participate in the development of existing and new web applications.
  • Manage the growing set of integration, the development happens in a collaborative, open-source environment.
  • We use modern web technologies and aim to deliver software with high quality and long lifetime.

As the successful candidate and future full-stack software engineer you will:

  • Develop software for ESS scientific operations.
  • Coordinate the development of software frameworks data processing and cataloguing.
  • Gathering specific requirements for software functionality.
  • Work with project partners and support them in their development efforts.
  • Manage integrations against the existing ESS IT landscape.

This is a permanent position which is to be filled as soon as practically possible. The candidate will work on-site in Kongens Lyngby, Denmark, but will be required to visit the ESS site in Lund, Sweden, on a regular basis.
About you
The successful candidate is likely to have a Bachelor's degree or equivalent in computer science, natural science or engineering, and 5-7 years relevant work experience. You have experience with state of the art AI/ML models and web technologies, like React, Angular, TypeScript, Node, Docker, Kubernetes, GraphQL. You have also worked with SQL and non-SQL databases (for example Postgres, MongoDB), and have documented experience with working in larger software projects. Last but not least, you are fluent in written and spoken English.

We believe that you have the ability to add value through creative solutions to complex problems. You have a great interest in team work in a cross-cultural environment and very good interpersonal skills.
