External Lecturer – 'Machine Learning' – DIS Stockholm

DIS Stockholm is hiring an enthusiastic external lecturer to teach the course “Machine Learning” in spring 2025. The external lecturer will plan and prepare the course prior to the start date of the course. The course will be offered twice per year: fall semester (mid August to mid December) and spring semester (mid January to mid May). The course includes lectures, Field Studies, one faculty-led Study Tour within Sweden, one faculty-led Study Tour in London, student evaluation, grading, and feedback.

Course Description
Machine learning utilizes training data to develop models capable of identifying patterns, classifying large amounts of information, making predictions or decisions, and providing insights embedded in vast and complex data. This course offers a hands-on approach to the theory and practice of machine learning, with real-world applications. It focuses on training datasets, machine learning approaches, and the fitting and optimization of models.

Main tasks and responsibilities as part-time faculty

  • Revise the syllabus for the course (in collaboration with DIS staff)
  • Teach at DIS Stockholm. Teaching format includes classroom lectures, experiential learning activities, and Field Studies
  • Assess students’ performance, grade assignments, and provide feedback to students throughout the course
  • Plan academic visits and travel with students in faculty-led Study Tours. The first tour takes the classroom within Sweden (3 days outside of Stockholm) and various sites of Stockholm (2 days). The second tour (6 days) takes the classroom to London.
  • Participate in meetings/workshops aimed to develop pedagogical skills in line with the DIS teaching philosophy

Professional competencies

  • Relevant background (engineer/researcher/scientist, Master’s degree or Ph.D. degree) and hands-on expertise within the field of the course
  • Candidate should be open to pedagogical support from DIS and capable of incorporating DIS’ interactive and hands-on teaching philosophy into teaching practice
  • Experience in creating a structured and interactive learning environment is an advantage
