PhD fellowship in Characterization of new functional 2D materials at the Globe Institute,

Københavns Universitet (KU)

Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen
We are offering a PhD fellowship in Characterization of new functional 2D materials commencing 1 February 2025 or as soon as possible hereafter.

Our group and research
At the core of our lab is Atomic force microscopes, along with IR and Raman spectroscopy. Our projects therefore revolves characterizing natural and artificial structures on nanoscale. The question we address range from the origin life to understanding properties of 2-D materials like graphite

Project description
The project evolves around using AFM-IR and other relevant techniques to characterize 2D materials produced either in the Chinse partner lab or other Danish and international partners. The purpose is to train a student in using advanced new nano meter scaled techniques to gain new insigths into 2d materials. In professor Zhongming labs they work on 2D materials with new unique properties. Specifically they work on new types of 2D materials where they create 2D alloys using combinations Molybdenum, Wolfram, Cobalt and Sulphur. These will be compared with traditional Graphene sheets. The idea is to have a PhD student characterize these new 2D materials developed in professor Zhonmings lab in Beijing China with a combination of NanoIR and Mirage (IR microscopy) with Raman. The NanoIR will provide Nanoscale details on single bonds and the Raman will provide additional information on the structure. If necessary we will add SEM with EDXS, X-ray scattering techniques and traditional transport measurements to the suite of tests. The initial plan is to train the student on functionalized graphene in collaboration with groups on KU and DTU and then add the more complex materials produced in Zhongmings lab to the study later. The Graphene/graphite work will also feed into our current research where we use same techniques to analyze ancient graphite in meteorites and very old rocks from Earth.
