We are looking for
A Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor), in physical and surface chemistry who can contribute to the long-term development of the department and primarily to the research and teaching related to water and its interactions with surfaces, polymers and biomolecules.

Work duties
The Department of Biomedical Science intends to recruit an Senior Lecturer in Physical and Surface Chemistry with a strong research foundation in related relevant scientific specialization. The new Senior Lecturer is crucial for our newly started Water Research Initiative (https://mau.se/en/news/large-donation-to-water-research-at-Malmo-University/) and for our ambitions to further integrate research and education. You will be well incorporated into the research activities carried out within the Biofilms Research Centre for Biointerfaces and are expected to further strengthen the link between the department's different research disciplines (which are best described as the interfaces between biology, chemistry, pharmacy, medicine, physics and technology). You have a strong commitment to both research and teaching, as well as the ability to contribute to the department's joint development in the long term.

You are expected to teach in several courses of our Biomedical Surface Science master programme (second cycle, in English) and Bachelor Programmes (first cycle, in Swedish or English. The teaching duties include course coordination, supervision, course administration and various management tasks. Additional tasks include equipment responsibility and acting as a link between national and international researchers and partner industry.

Qualifications
A person who has demonstrated both research and teaching expertise and been awarded a PhD shall be qualified for employment as senior lecturer.

A teacher at Malmö University is expected to have university teacher training corresponding to at least 15 credits, or corresponding formal university teacher training, which is determined through validation. New staff members lacking this training must, within the scope of their appointment, commence such training within one year of assuming their position.

In addition to formal competence, the general eligibility requirement is that university employees are suitable for and have the personal abilities otherwise required to perform the duties of the post well and to represent the university in the best possible way.

Specific requirements for this position:

  • PhD in physical chemistry, surface chemistry, colloid chemistry, polymer chemistry, biophysics, physical pharmacy or other relevant discipline
  • A Swedish docent (Associate Professor) title or equivalent validated competence.
  • Established and independent researcher in physical chemistry and/or surface chemistry or related discipline
  • Research publications in reputable international scientific journals
  • Experience from writing competitive external grant applications that have resulted in awarded funding

The following would be of benefit for the position:

  • Experience in water-related research
  • Life science and/or pharmacy related research experience
  • Experience of research and teaching in organic and/or analytical chemistry
  • Experience of research and teaching in biochemistry and/or biophysics
  • Experience of research and teaching in physical and galenic pharmacy
  • Experience of research and teaching in molecular modelling
  • Experience in surface characterization techniques, calorimetric or water sorption techniques, scattering techniques, other laboratory techniques relevant for surface and colloid chemistry or pharmacy
  • Strong software skills, e.g. in MATLAB, molecular modelling software etc.
  • International research experience, experience of collaboration with national and international research organisations
  • Experience of research collaboration with industry and the public sector, with a good understanding of their needs
  • Experience in project management

Assessment criteria
The assessment criteria for appointment as a Senior Lecturer shall be the degree of the expertise required as a qualification for employment. As much attention shall be given to the assessment of teaching expertise as to the assessment of other qualifying criteria (Chapter 4, Section 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance).

A Senior Lecturer must be established within their scientific field, taking into account the nature and tradition of the subject specialisation.

A Senior Lecturer must demonstrate:

  • Documented competence in their field
  • Documented ability to communicate and collaborate with actors in other parts of society with a clear connection to education and research

Teaching expertise relates to:

  • Documented ability to carry out and lead education using various teaching methods within higher education
  • Documented experience in pedagogical development work and a reflective presentation of their own pedagogical outlook and practices
  • Documented ability to link research and education with regards to both content and teaching

Scientific proficiency relates to:

  • Documented ability to independently conduct research of a high quality
  • Research within fields relevant to the appointment in question
  • Active participation in the scientific community

Faculty, Department and Research environment
The Department of Biomedical Science at the Faculty of Health and Society (www.mau.se/bmv) offers education leading to a professional qualification as a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy and Biomedical Analyst (both at first-cycle level, 180 credits), and a Master's programme, Biomedical Surface Science (second-cycle level, 120 credits), as well as freestanding courses at first-cycle and second-cycle level. The department operates in the multifaceted meeting between biology, chemistry, pharmacy, medicine, physics and technology, and the interdisciplinary approach to research and education aims to further develop the theoretical and practical understanding of the complex subject. In this interaction between knowledge building and application, our students are out in pharmacies, clinics, hospital laboratories and at companies. Based on the balance between basic and applied research, the department has also been successful in attracting funding from regional, national and international research funders. Our researchers are constantly challenging the boundaries between scientific specialisations, between basic and applied research, and between academia and industry.

The department's research is also connected to the “Biofilms - Research Center for Biointerfaces” (www.mau.se/brcb), which integrates biomedical and surface science with clinical and translational research in pharmaceutical, medical, dental, food, and environmental applications, working closely with regional industry
