Drone design, implementation and testing at The Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering.
The Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (IME), part of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Sothern Denmark, offers a part-time position (01.01.2025 – 31.12.2025) as a Student Helper for its drone activities. The Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering is located in the inspiring building of Alsion that is place of residence for a number of enterprises in the Science Park: South Jutland Symphony Orchestra and the concert hall of Alsion. Thus, the university has close bonds to the industrial as well as the cultural environment of Sønderborg.
The Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering provides a comprehensive suite of tools necessary for a full manufacturing process, including various modern 3D printers, laser cutters, 3D scanners among classic manufacturing methods. It also has a full-fledged Drone Lab with motion tracking, thrust testing stand and attitude control testing stand.
Alongside mechatronic competences, the student helper is expected to have insight into and not limited to basic drone design, electronics, 3D printing and mechanics of flight.
Assignments of the Student Helper at IME include:
- Design drone prototypes
- Create technical drawings.
- Manufacture and assemble drone prototypes.
- Select and install the necessary electronics based on the specific task of the drone.
- Testing drone prototypes, including flying them in FPV mode.
- Prototyping and rapid iteration.
- Performance evaluation.
The following qualifications and skills are strong assets:
- Experience in designing multi-rotor and fixed-winged drones.
- Experience in integrating and tuning drone electronics (including flight controllers).
- Experience in creating technical drawings.
- Experience in flying drones, including FPV.
- Familiarity with aerodynamic principles.

Employment shall take place in accordance with the framework agreement between the Ministry of Finance and SUL (National Union for Student Teachers in Government Service).
