Applied Scientist / Engineer – Stack Hardware Engineering
The Ballard team in Burnaby, BC is searching for an Engineer/Applied Scientist – Stack Hardware Engineering (E2). As a Stack Hardware Engineer/Applied Scientist, you will be working directly on fuel cell core technology, surrounded by world-class experts. Responsibilities:
• Develop designs for structural hardware components in PEM fuel cell stacks based on requirements cascaded from product specifications
• Perform preliminary structural, thermal, fluid flow analysis and trade off studies on fuel cell stack hardware components
• Build ex-situ and in-situ tools for conducting experiments to validate design concepts
• Participate in the entire product lifecycle from concept to production including engineering design reviews
• Collaborate with members of Ballard’s Modeling, Stack and Systems Engineering Groups to develop designs that meet unit cell and system requirements
• Work with Quality and Test Engineering departments to qualify new fuel cell hardware components
Qualifications:
• B.Sc degree in Mechanical or Materials Engineering
• 2-3 years of experience in relevant industry
• Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and capability for critical thinking
• Strong interpersonal, communication (oral and written) and listening skills
• Ability to work in a multi-functional team environment
• Familiarity with design tools such as DFMEA and RCL/RDM
• Comfortable with drawing standards, including GD&T
• Ability to interpret test data and compare against design objectives
Assets:
• Experience with high volume mechanical part design (e.g. injection molding, casting, stamping, etc.)
• Knowledge of structured problem-solving methods (is/is-not, fishbone, shanin, etc.)
• Experience in motive applications such as bus, train, automotive or marine
• Understanding of fuel cell physics and design
The typical hiring range for this position is $75,000 – 93,840. Ballard considers many factors in determining total compensation, including the successful Candidate’s job-related knowledge, skills, experience, position location, and internal equity.
