Would you like to be part of our specialist services group, who have been providing engineering support to space agencies and prime contractors for more than 40 years?
For our customer, the European Space Agency (ESA), we are seeking an experienced DevOps Engineer to work at ESA’s ESTEC site in Noordwijk, The Netherlands.

Job description
You will be a member of Terma’s IT team integrated into the customer responsible for the migration, maintenance, and operations of ESA’s Collaborative Software Development Environment (CSDE). The CSDE integrates a number of COTS productivity tools like Atlassian suite (Jira, Confluence), Gitea, Nexus, OwnCloud.

The CSDE is used by internal and external users working collectively at remote locations on software development activities for ESA projects and programmes. The next phase of work covers the migration of the existing solution under the Directorate of Technical and Quality Management (TEC)’s overall IT service provisions, technical support for the design and implementation of future CSDE components, and maintenance and operations of the CSDE as a service to end-users.

Responsibilities
Your specific responsibilities will be:

  • Support the migration of the CSDE from the current technical baseline to the D/TEC internal IT service baseline:
    • Identify and analyze differences across all system components.
    • Define configuration changes and resources needed to address potential gaps and issues.
    • Identify risks to operations during the transitions phase.
    • Compile operational and maintenance documentation.
    • Perform the migration of the service compliant to ESA and TEC policies.

This phase is expected to be completed within 2.5 months of activity kick-off.

  • Support to the maintenance of operations and further evolution of the CSDE platform, both infrastructure and applications:
    • Ensure operations of the platform to the agreed service level.
    • Respond to incidents and resolve them in a timely manner.
    • Provide effective support to end-users through a dedicated service desk.
    • Manage changes and evolutions of the infrastructure to minimize disruptions to users.
    • Identify opportunity for improvements and implementing them.

This phase will be on-going once the migration has been completed.

This is a full-time position located at ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands.

The start of work is foreseen to be August 2024.

How to succeed in this position?
The successful candidate shall have:

  • A degree (Bachelors’ or Master’s) in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or IT.
  • At least 4 years of relevant professional experience in a similar role, ideally acquired in the large multinational technical environment.
  • Proven technical skills in scripting and programming, using languages such as Java, Python, and C#, for customizations and integrations, on both Windows and Linux target platforms.
  • Proficiency in scripting languages such as Python, Bash and Powershell for automation tasks.
  • Deep understanding of modern web-based technologies and frameworks for both front-end and back-end development, including but not limited to, Python, Angular, React, Vue, ASP.NET, Node.js, and WebAssembly.
  • Experience in troubleshooting and resolving complex technical issues related to software installation, configuration, and operational use in a hybrid environment (cloud services, technical machines, office desktop machines and application delivery platforms).
  • Experience with containerization technologies, such as Docker/Podman, and container orchestration platforms, such as Kubernetes, for cloud application deployment.
  • Proficiency in using version and configuration control and issue tracking using collaborative development environments such as Gitlab and Confluence/Jira.
  • Deep understanding of system virtualisation, networking (including but not limited to firewalls, proxy servers, intrusion detection), storage (file systems, back-up solutions), authentication, encryption, performance tuning, load balancing, caching, and other optimization techniques.
  • Good Working knowledge and experience of DevOps principles and practices, including continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD).
  • Familiarity with security best practices, risk assessment, and compliance with industry standards and regulations.

Desirable:

  • Specific knowledge of and experience with:
    • RedHat, Ubuntu, FreeBSD
    • Docker, Podman
    • Rootless containers
    • Iptables and OpenBSD Packet Filter
    • WMware vCloud Director
    • Networking in Linux and FreeBSD
    • Postfix, SMTP, IMAP, POP3
    • Atlassian products
    • Java Tomcat, Nginx, Apache,
    • Python, Bash, Java, PHP, HTML
  • Knowledge of the ESA specific security and data protection policies is an asset.

Soft skills:

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical users.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment, with strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, with a keen attention to detail.
  • Proactive attitude
  • Fluent English.
