Head of Medical Physics

Region Hovedstaden

Department of Oncology, Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen, Denmark

We are looking for a highly skilled and motivated medical physics expert to lead, manage and develop the radiotherapy physics program at Rigshospitalet’s Department of Oncology. We perform more than 50,000 fractions of radiotherapy annually to 4,500 patients. We use state-of-the-art equipment including Truebeam, Ethos and Halcyon units by Varian in addition to a ViewRay MR-linac. The unit also has the responsibility for 2 CT scanners from Siemens and a 3 Tesla Vida MR scanner plus brachytherapy suites. You will be leading the team of 46 staff responsible for maintenance of the equipment and quality assurance and quality control of the processes. You will also be overseeing the clinical medical physics and dose planning services as performed by these 33 staff. The clinical leadership will in addition to you consist of responsible physician, Jeppe Friborg and head nurse, Lisbet Prenter.

Department of Oncology provide radiotherapy services for a large number of common cancer diseases but also serve as a highly specialized cancer center and therefore maintain and develop radiotherapy with less common techniques, such as total body irradiation and total skin irradiation. The level of ambition is very high both regarding radiotherapy planning and delivery. Research and development are highly prioritized, and it is the expectation that we can continue to provide and develop radiotherapy at the highest international level to the benefit of our patients. We also provide on-site and remote training to both national and international pre- and postgraduate participants. The department takes active part in the Danish Center for Particle Therapy as one of the top referrers and collaborates with shared physics, medical and dose planning staff.

Department of Oncology hosts a research group of approximately 18 PhD students and 6 postdocs, many of whom have a radiotherapy focus on their research. You will be collaborating with this group and Professors Lena Specht (MD) and Ivan Vogelius (Physicist) to maximize the impact of the clinical/research efforts in the hospital. We collaborate closely with other leading departments in Rigshospitalet, including the neighboring Department of Nuclear Medicine, but also several surgical departments, radiology, genetics etc. The access to high level expertise across a broad range of medical disciplines is a particular strength of the hospital system in which the department is embedded.

Staff and technical equipment
You will be leading a group comprised of 17 physicists, 13 planning radiographers, 9 dose planners, 5 service engineers and 2 IT technicians – some with part time positions, e.g. due to part time research fellowships. You will refer to the head of department of Oncology, Ulrik Lassen.

The main delivery platform currently consists of 7 Truebeam machines, 2 Ethos, 1 Halcyon and a ViewRay MRIdian MR accelerator plus one Novalis Tx machines with part-time utilization.

Required qualifications
The successful candidate will be a role model with drive and motivation to provide the best possible radiotherapy to every patient.

  • Certification as Medical Physics Expert by the Danish Society of Medical Physics or equivalent certifications are required.
  • Extensive experience from a state-of-the-art radiotherapy department.
  • Extensive knowledge of photon radiotherapy planning and delivery including regulatory aspects and best practice guidelines and recommendations.

Preferred additional qualifications

  • Several years’ experience with employee supervision
  • It is an advantage, but not a prerequisite, if you speak Danish.

Further information
Based on background education and seniority, your salary, pension and terms of employment will be settled in accordance with the existing agreement between the Danish Regions (Danske Regioner) and the relevant professional organization.
