Your team You will be part of the Sector Accounts and Government Finance Statistics Section, which is part of the External Statistics and Sector Accounts Division of the Directorate General Statistics (DG/S). The Division develops and compiles macroeconomic statistics for monetary policy and financial stability analysis and policymaking. The Section has around 17 staff and is primarily responsible for developing, compiling and disseminating the euro area accounts (financial and non-financial accounts by sector) and government finance statistics. It provides user services for these domains and coordinates the ECB’s contribution to further developing and harmonising these statistics across the EU and in international fora.

Our Section is currently developing several new statistical products, including climate related indicators, distributional wealth accounts and financial accounts for foreign-controlled non-financial corporations. We are also implementing updated statistical standards and introducing a new compilation system. You will work closely with the entire Section and Division, other DG/S teams, national central banks, Eurostat and national statistical offices.

The ECB is an inclusive employer and we strive to reflect the diversity of the population we serve. We encourage you to apply irrespective of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, race, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or other characteristics.

Your role As an Economist-Statistician you will:

  • contribute to producing and publishing the euro area accounts and/or government finance statistics;
  • participate in the development of the Section’s new statistical outputs, and the associated statistical methods, techniques and data sources;
  • help to implement the next version of the European System of Accounts in our statistics;
  • prepare and present notes to the European System of Central Banks Working Group on Financial Accounts and Government Finance Statistics and prepare briefing material for ECB management;
  • represent the ECB in internal and/or external statistical fora and maintain contacts with relevant working-level counterparts.

The position offers you excellent opportunities to gain expertise in the concepts and compilation of financial accounts, government finance statistics and national accounts, as well as their links with other ECB statistics. It will also allow you to contribute to the development of new products and the use of new, often granular, data sources and related IT tools. Your tasks within the Section will take into account your profile and interests. You will be part of a multicultural team that strives for continuous innovation to make a positive impact on the lives of European citizens.

Qualifications, experience and skills Essential:

  • a master’s degree or equivalent in statistics, economics, finance, mathematics, computer science or another relevant field (see How you can join us for details on degree equivalences);
  • in addition to the above, at least three years of professional experience in developing and producing economic statistics;
  • a working knowledge of national accounts methodology and/or related statistics, such as monetary and financial statistics or balance of payments data;
  • good oral and written communication skills;
  • an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Desired:

  • experience in using statistical and/or mathematical software, such as Fame, Python and/or R, applied to macroeconomic and/or granular datasets;
  • experience in integrating macroeconomic statistics, and the use of detailed and complex data sources including granular databases.

You engage collaboratively with others. You pursue team goals and learn willingly from other people’s diverse perspectives. You signal any need for change by explaining it and proposing alternative solutions. You analyse complex information effectively and can evaluate different views to arrive at solutions. You know and anticipate stakeholder needs.

You are motivated to be part of our team and to develop and use your skills and competencies to achieve the aims of this position.

Further information The contract(s) offered will be short-term ESCB/IO, the appointment being for 24 months as of the exact starting date of the selected person (ideally on 1 October 2024), extendable to up to 36 months. Candidates must have a contract of employment with their home institution for a period of at least one year beyond the duration of the ECB contract being offered.
