Rapid Fabrication Facilities Student Helper at the Department for Mechanical and Electrical Engineering
The Department for Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (DME), part of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Southern Denmark, offers a part-time position (01.05.2024 – 31.12.2025) as a Student Helper for its Rapid Fabrication Facilities, in direct correlation with both teaching and manufacturing activities.

The Department for Mechanical and Electrical Engineering is located in the inspiring building of Alsion that is place of residence for a number of enterprises in the Science Park: South Jutland Symphony Orchestra and the concert hall of Alsion. Thus, the university has close bonds to the industrial as well as the cultural environment of Sønderborg. In line with a new strategic track of the Department for Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, the institute is seeking to expand its prototyping facilities to offer a full reverse engineering package, including modern 3D scanning and 3D printing among classic prototyping methods.

The facilities should be utilized optimally by a variety of courses, including both lecture-based courses and projects, and the Student Helper should adjust to the varied demands this brings. Alongside mechanical competences, the mechatronics engineer is expected to have insight in and not limited to basic embedded programming and electronics, as maintaining and expanding the features of pre-existent machinery shall be a common task. DME is involved in a variety of mechatronics projects, and fundamental knowledge of all the above areas of expertise becomes essential in such a broad engineering landscape. Assignments of the Student Helper at DME include:

• Integrating rapid-prototyping facilities with web technologies in order to increase accessibility and transparency of existing facilities like TheCore
• Development and maintenance of a SaaS solution for asset tracking and resource management
• Design of extensions to the existing software to facilitate commercial activities and collaboration with local companies in the future

The following qualifications and skills are strong assets

• Familiarity with RESTful architectures and document-based databases, such as MongoDB.
• Hands-on experience in web development with technologies such as React, Tailwind CSS and modern frameworks such as Next.JS.
• Experience with containerized applications by use of tools like Docker.
• Strong knowledge about Linux, modern CI / CD workflows and version control with Git by use of tools, such as GitLab
• Prior knowledge of integration between embedded devices and data management endpoints
