Assistant Professor in Experimental Quantum Information Physics with Superconducting Circuits

Københavns Universitet (KU)

An Assistant Professorship is available in the Superconducting Quantum Information Devices Lab (SQuID Lab) at the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen.

We seek outstanding candidates with a proven record of high-impact research in experimental quantum device and quantum computing physics. The ideal candidate will have ambition to work on aspects of experimental quantum information physics with superconducting circuits and to become an integral part of the senior researcher team within SQuID Lab.

The position is open from 15 August 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. The duration is three years with possible extension upon mutual agreement.
The position is supported by grants from the ERC (Starting Grant) and InnovationFund Denmark (Grand Solutions).

The Assistant Professor position will be embedded within the Superconducting Quantum Information Devices Lab (SQuID Lab), a team of roughly 15 researchers from bachelor to senior researcher level, working jointly at the Center for Quantum Devices and the Novo Nordisk Quantum Computing Programme, both located at the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen.

The research in SQuID Lab is broadly within two areas of superconducting quantum information physics:

  • Novel superconducting qubits, circuits and couplers, e.g. protected qubit encodings, non-standard Josephson junction physics, developing new qubit-qubit couplings and related activities.
  • Multi-qubit superconducting systems, e.g. novel control, characterization, benchmarking and calibration techniques as well as quantum error mitigation and quantum error correction.

The assistant professor’s duties will primarily include research, including obligations with regard to publication/scientific communication and research-based teaching with associated examination obligations. To a limited extent this may also include performance of other duties.

Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their level of documented, internationally competitive research. The ability to attract external funding will be considered together with outreach qualifications. Teaching qualifications are not mandatory but documented teaching qualifications and teaching experience will be considered.

Six overall criteria apply for assistant professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen. The six criteria (research, teaching, societal impact, organisational contribution, external funding and leadership) are considered a framework for the overall assessment of candidates.

Please read more at https://jobportal.ku.dk/videnskabelige-stillinger/kriterier-for-videnskabelige-stillinger/dokumenter-til-meritering/5a_Criteria_for_recognising_merit_-Assistant_professors.pdf.

The candidate should have a PhD in physics or equivalent and have a demonstrated record of research, mentorship, and teaching.

Inquiries can be made to Associate Professor Morten Kjaergaard ([email protected]) and Research Scientist Jacob Hastrup ([email protected]).

The University wishes our staff to reflect the diversity of society and thus welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background.

Terms of employment
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.

Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.

Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.

The application, in English, must be submitted electronically by clicking APPLY NOW below.

Please include

  • Curriculum vitae
    • Including, if relevant, details of research funding and research leadership experience
  • Diplomas (Master and PhD degree or equivalent)
  • Research plan – description of current and future research plans (max 2 pages)
  • If available, description and documentation of teaching and supervision experience and qualifications - please describe and document:
    • Experience with supervision of BSc and MSc students (max 2 pages)
    • Teaching experience (max 2 pages)
    • Formal pedagogical training (max 2 pages)
  • Complete publication list
  • Separate reprints of 5 particularly relevant papers

The deadline for applications is Friday 17 May 2024, 23:59 GMT +2.
