Job description
We are looking for Space Debris Engineer to join our team and support the ESA missions at ESOC, in Darmstadt, Germany or at ESTEC site in Noordwijk, The Netherlands, to support the activities of the Space Safety Programme and to Clean Space Office ADRIOS and COSMIC missions projects.

Responsibilities
As a Space Debris Engineer, you will be responsible for conducting activities for the support, analysis, development and research activities of the ESA Clean Space Office.

You will support mission customers for:

  • SDM compliance verification analysis tasks in collaboration with the Space Debris Office;
  • Close Proximity Operations and In-orbit Servicing related tasks;
  • EcoDesign and Life Cycle Assessment compliance verification analysis tasks development and research of the ESA Clean Space Office.

You will follow-up external research, as well as OSIP activities and plan/adapt internal work accordingly, support CDF sessions and support the definition and follow-up of the studies for TDE, GSTP, ARTES and other ESA programs in the area of space debris mitigation, space debris remediation and EcoDesign.

Technical Requirements:

  • Engineering support to activities of the Space Safety Programme.
  • Engineering support to Clean Space Office ADRIOS and COSMIC missions projects.
  • Support mission customers for the SDM compliance verification analysis tasks in collaboration with the Space Debris Office .
  • Contribute to mission milestone reviews for compliance aspects w.r.t. space debris mitigation requirements.
  • Support mission customers for Close Proximity Operations and In-orbit Servicing related tasks.
  • Support mission customers for EcoDesign and Life Cycle Assessment compliance verification analysis tasks
  • Contribute to mission milestone reviews for compliance aspects w.r.t. Life Cycle Assessment requirements
  • Follow-up external research, as well as OSIP activities and plan/adapt internal work accordingly
  • Support CDF sessions
  • Support the definition and follow-up of the studies for TDE, GSTP, ARTES and other ESA programs in the area of space debris mitigation, space debris remediation and ecodesign.
  • Contribution to the Maintenance, evolution and upgrade of ESA’s databases for Life Cycle Assessment
  • Contribute to the collection of best-practices and elaboration of guidelines in the areas of EcoDesign, Space Debris Mitigation and Close Proximity Operations.
  • Contributions to technical working groups for development of standards and handbooks in the areas of EcoDesign, Space Debris Mitigation and Close Proximity Operations.
  • Participate to the Office’s regular routine meetings
  • Provide Training on OPS-SC processes to internal and external trainees also in training sessions not organised by ESA
  • Present and promote ESA achievements, recent research and work performed at the Clean Space at conferences (once per year), and support related public relation or outreach activities
  • Support organization and preparation of conferences, webinars and workshops gathering various stakeholders (agencies, industry, operators, regulators, etc) as well as bi-lateral meetings with key partners
  • Provision of technical expertise to the ESA Technical Responsible in responding to TV, broadcast and newspaper interview requests on space debris

Specific Requirements:
Ideally, while performing the support, you will need to have:

  • A high degree of independence
  • Negotiation skills
  • Communication skills
  • Good team-work and workplan coordination skills
  • Understand the way the Space Safety Program works
  • Understand the way R&D and technology development programs work
  • Spacecraft Systems engineering expertise
  • Experience in different space project phases
  • Expertise in Space segment related aspects of Space Debris Mitigation assessment and solutions (remediation, mitigation, risk assessment – reentry, successful disposal, break-up, etc.)
  • Good knowledge of Space Debris Mitigation technologies state of the art
  • Good understanding of In-Orbit Servicing and Close Proximity Operations State of the Art
  • Good understanding of Life Cycle Assessment State of the Art
  • Support to Outreach activities

Essential Skills

  • Relevant university degrees in the field of either astronomy, mathematics, engineering, or physics
  • Knowledge to develop solutions to technical (systems engineering) problems in cooperation with customers and other experts
  • Good communication and presentation skills
  • Fluency in English, both in speech and writing
  • Coordinate and interact with other service providers in associated fields as well as (internal and external) customers of services provided by the Clean Space Office.
  • Ability to work independently but communicate effectively and efficiently within a larger team.

Desirable Skills include:

  • Familiarity with the ESTEC or ESOC environment
  • Familiarity/experience with Clean Space Office tasks
  • Experience in dealing with external interfaces
  • Ability to multi-task efficiently; working on multiple activities; multiple missions simultaneously.

This is a full-time position to be located at ESOC’s premises in Darmstadt, Germany or ESTEC site in Noordwijk, The Netherlands, with the planned start date on the 1st of July 2024.

Travel: It is foreseeing an average of 4 European missions per year.

Qualifications & Competencies
Fluency in English (written and spoken) is mandatory. You will have the capability to work in teams, while at the same time being a self-starter, able to work independently with little supervision.

Due to the variety of the tasks and the scope of the systems to be supported, you should be able to quickly adapt to changes in assignments, manage tasks in an efficient way, and demonstrate a high degree of independence and autonomy. You must have excellent analytical skills, and be effective working within a small team, and have good presentation and communication skills.

You should be able to conduct all your activities in an orderly and disciplined manner, encouraging a friendly and collaborative working environment, demonstrating capabilities in applying principles, handling critical discourse, and be open to discussing and sharing solutions with others. Moreover, you must be able to participate actively in technical meetings and/or formal reviews and activity assessments.
