Mechanical Engineer for Neutron Delivery Systems

ESSE - European Spallation Source ERIC

Apply

The European Spallation Source (ESS) is a partnership organization of 13 European member countries located in the city of Lund, Sweden. The ESS is hiring motivated and inspiring people from across the globe to design, construct and operate the world’s most powerful neutron source. We seek collaborative, talented people in a range of fields who are excited about playing a part in the future of science in Europe.

Come and build the future of science with us!

The Neutron Scattering Systems division (NSS), in collaboration with its European partners, is at the forefront of delivering cutting-edge neutron beamlines and developing key technologies to facilitate the scientific utilization of produced neutrons at our facility. 15 neutron beamlines are currently under construction at ESS and a total of 22 beamlines is planned to complete our state-of-the-art instrument suite.

The Technical Projects Group (TPG), a vital component of the NSS division, provides the engineering expertise that drive the construction of neutron beamlines at ESS and contribute to the design and development of specialized instrumentation components. From radiological shielding systems to neutron polarization capabilities, TPG plays a vital role in ensuring the integration of the most advanced neutron delivery technologies to our entire instrument suite.

About the role:
We are seeking a Mechanical engineer with a strong background in designing and constructing cutting-edge scientific instrumentation to join our multidisciplinary team of engineers. As part of our team, you will play a key role in the design, construction, and integration of beamline components such as neutron guides, high performance positioning systems and large vacuum vessels.

Your key responsibilities and tasks will include:

  • Lead the coordination of design and construction activities of Neutron Delivery Systems components on behalf of the TPG.
  • Represent the group in technical reviews as mechanical systems expert; provide guidance and support to instrument teams in meeting both technical and scientific requirements for the instruments.
  • Develop mechanical design solutions for beam delivery systems to be implemented within the neutron beamlines construction projects.
  • Lead integration and installation of complex neutron instruments technical components.
  • Manage technical documentation such as technical specifications, design descriptions, and installation documentation.
  • Lead procurement contract, coordinate external contractors and internal resources, to ensure the timely delivery of the technical systems.

This is a full-time, 3-year fixed term position located in Lund, Sweden.

About you:
We attach great importance to personality and attitude, so we're looking for a real team player: Someone who is sociable, has excellent communication skills, who likes to collaborate with different people and who is committed to helping this amazing project to realise its full potential. We need a hands-on self-starter who can work in a structured, organized, responsible, and above all, safe manner.

Key requirements for this role include:

  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or other related field.
  • Five years or more of demonstrated experience in design and construction of mechanical systems or scientific instrumentation.
  • Proficiency in mechanical design, particularly using Catia V6 or similar, 3D Cad software, as well as familiarity with planning tools.
  • Experience with drafting and reviewing mechanical drawings and technical documentation.
  • Experience with vacuum vessels, motorized high precision positioners, and alignment devices for optical systems would be beneficial.

As a person you have excellent problem-solving and analytical skills and a curiosity for new challenges. You thrive in an environment where teamwork and collaboration are valued, sharing your ideas while also valuing the input of others.

Fluency in written and spoken English is a requirement, as it is the working language at ESS.

What can we offer?
Aside from the chance to work at a truly unique big science project, you can also expect:

  • An opportunity to contribute to the future discoveries within neutron science.
  • A stunning, brand-new workplace filled with innovative minds and brilliant people from across the globe.
  • A challenging, innovative and stimulating work environment.
  • 30 days of annual leave, as well as more than 10 days of public holiday and company days off or days with limited working hours.
  • Monthly pension contributions on top of your salary.
  • Focus on work-life balance.
  • Preventative healthcare benefit.
