Wood Thilsted

Chief Consultant - Offshore Wind Structures

Together, through unmatched engineering and collaborative teamwork, we can shape a brighter future for our planet. Wood Thilsted is designing the global transition to green energy. We’re offshore wind engineering experts, and we invite you to join us.

Ours is a purpose-driven company. Our engineering helps speed the transition towards a greener planet Earth, with the wellbeing of our employees being every bit as vital. People and planet go hand in hand – we’re in business to look after both. There’s more than 190 staff, working within the UK, USA, Denmark, Poland, South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan.

As a company, we strive for two things: Technical excellence, and to provide the best overall value to our clients. As a culture, knowledge sharing, mutual trust and a great social atmosphere is key. Wood Thilsted is a truly exciting company to work for, something we’re most proud of.

Areas of responsibility: The job opening is for the Chief Consultant within the Secondary Structures and Electrical department. Secondary Structures include the access systems and work platforms in the foundation that are required for personnel safe to safely access and operate (O&M) the offshore wind turbine. The electrical systems of the foundation consist of the HV Array cables and the LV equipment, for example, junction boxes, lighting and navigational aids. We engage early with the client and possible subcontractors to arrive at a safe and efficient design in line with the latest HSE and electrical regulations. In addition, secondary structures work closely with the primary structures team to ensure the secondary structures design has a minimal impact on the primary structure and shall also be optimized for fabrication and installation.

Your main objective is to develop and enhance the Wood Thilsted secondary structures design (the “WT Way”) and optimize the electrical design integration within the foundation. You will primarily focus on technical development and improving the Wood Thilsted design package whilst aiming to optimise our projects' delivery time. Standardizing and automating the design and verifications is key to succeeding in this task. You will be supported by a highly motivated, multidisciplinary and skilled team of engineers. In your role you will:

  • Develop and optimize the Wood Thilsted secondary structures design and focus on automating the geometry generation, structural verifications and reporting, across the full range of support structure concepts.
  • Develop the standard deliverables for the electrical team and automate the generation of specifications and reporting.
  • Work on innovations and be part of Joint Industry Projects to prepare our company for future developments.
  • Support engineers in the traditional manner of a Chief Consultant to solve their most challenging design problems and to develop high-end structural designs.
  • Propose innovative design solutions to reduce our designs' carbon impact and embodied energy.
  • Liaise with your colleagues and other departments to ensure the highest quality of your work.
  • Use your knowledge and experience to prepare detailed engineering documents, specifications and guidelines.
  • Develop the in-house engineering software applied for secondary structures and electrical design.
  • Work on standardized components used in the concept and basic design phases.
  • Develop close relationships with industry leaders in wind turbine design and initiate JIP's to optimize the tower/foundation structural and electrical design interfacing.
  • Work with the latest Construction, Design and Management Regulations.

While your focus will be on secondary structures and electrical design, we believe that you'll work best and stay engaged if you get involved in multiple areas of our projects. We value the ability to innovate and create solutions where none previously existed, so if that sounds like you, Wood Thilsted would like to hear from you.

The opening applies to one of our offices in the United Kingdom or Denmark.

Your background: You should hold a master's degree in Mechanical/Structural/Civil engineering. You should thrive in an international environment and speak and write English fluently. You will have a strong drive, take the initiative and responsibility for your work, and get motivated by creating excellent results through teamwork. It is essential that you possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to liaise with other consultants effectively. Furthermore, it is essential for this role if you have:

  • 10+ years of relevant experience in the design of offshore structures.
  • 5+ years developing technical expertise specific to secondary structures design for offshore wind structures.
  • Experience with electrical design and implementation into offshore wind structures.
  • Understanding relevant design codes and standards such as DNVGL, Eurocode 3, CDM etc.
  • Experience with the application of Finite Element Methods for structural analysis.
  • Extensive experience with fabrication processes of steel structures, preferably for the offshore industry.
  • Worked on innovating, leading and developing technical capabilities within your organisation and optimized processes.

In return, we offer excellent opportunities and a chance to deepen your competency and expertise. You’ll be continually involved in exciting and dynamic projects, in an inclusive environment where everyone is encouraged to be themselves – and be their best. We offer a competitive salary package, a great pension, both health and life insurance, as well as flexibility around where you work and when. Our values are at the heart of everything we do. We are result-orientated, innovation-driven and committed to a brighter future.
