Risk engineer for Energy & Transport

DBI - Dansk Brand- og sikringsteknisk Institut

Do you want to apply your skills to promote a fast and safe transition of the energy and transportation sectors away from carbon-based fuels? Do you have experience in risk analysis? We have an open position you might find interesting.

Advanced Fire Engineering – Maritime and Energy is a growing department in a large Danish organization focused on fire safety and security. We continue our impact-making journey in the energy and transportation sectors, working to promote a safe and fast transition of these sectors away from carbon-based fuels to contribute to addressing climate change. We do this by running R&D projects and serving customers in these industries. We demonstrate the potential of new technologies, work with authorities and the public to promote fair and safe adoption of technologies related to renewable energy, hydrogen, batteries, ammonia, methanol, container shipping, passenger transportation and much more.

You can see examples of our work here.

We are a diverse team of professionals from varied backgrounds (engineers, social scientists, master mariners, business developers…) and 14 countries. We value a collaborative working atmosphere, skilled colleagues who say what they think and appreciate feedback, and high-quality work.

We are looking for an experienced Risk Engineer skilled in risk modelling and risk analysis to work on different industry projects both with clients and in R&D.

About the role
As our new Risk Engineer, you will take part in many projects aiming at designing or documenting fire and explosion safety through risk analysis and you will be leading the risk-related work.

You will be part of project teams working either for a client or within a consortium in an R&D project. You will meet many different application fields and can one day work with hazards on board a ship, the next day with hazards in a power plant. The projects you will work on can relate to technology demonstration, product development, production of safety documentation, development of new testing protocols etc.

You will often work with data obtained from fire tests performed in our own facilities and simulation results from in-house teams, hence increasing real-life applicability of your results and providing more accurate conclusions.

Your goal is to ensure high quality of the implementation of risk analysis methodologies into projects and of the obtained results. You will also be supporting the project teams with your risk expertise.

You will have to keep yourself updated on the progress of the field and keep developing your expertise.

Within your own field of expertise, you will act as a mentor for the team and can take on training for other team members.

You will report to one of the Team Leaders of the department.

Your main tasks will be:

  • Act as a Risk Lead in our project teams to drive the technical work forward, choosing adapted risk methodologies and ensuring their implementation in the projects
  • Link qualitative and quantitative data to risk analysis for a comprehensive result
  • Initiate and drive data creation when needed
  • Co-develop testing and safety procedures for new fire and explosion tests relating to e.g. batteries and hydrogen
  • Present your work to clients, at international conferences, or internally within the company/department
  • Provide assistance and mentoring to team members needing your expertise

What you need to succeed
We would like to see:

  • Creative and proactive problem solver who can work independently.
  • Comfortable working in a multicultural and multidisciplinary team.
  • Curious team member who likes a challenge.
  • Good verbal and written communication.

Your qualifications:

  • 5 years’ documented experience with risk analysis from energy, process, chemical or other relevant industry.
  • Minimum M.Sc. in fire safety engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering or equivalent relevant engineering education.
  • Knowledge of applicable standards and regulations.
  • Excellent in both written and spoken English.

In addition, it would be beneficial if you have prior experience with fire and explosion safety.
