Do you want to advance the state-of-the-art research in hybrid wood species design? The Royal Danish Academy invites applicants for a position as a postdoctoral researcher. The position is offered at the Royal Danish Academy, in the Institute of Architecture and Design, at the Cluster for Material Studies, and will work with researchers and industrial partners related to the project.

The vacant position is a 2 year, full-time position and we hope to fill the position as soon as possible..

The position is part of the research project WoodVita, which is funded by Realdania and Knud Højgaards Fond grants. The hybrid species design studies are focused on material investigations for analyzing, characterizing and developing novel wood composite structures based on reclaimed wood and new fast growing wood species. The WoodVita project is developed in a partnership with Aalborg University, architectural firms, engineering firms, component manufacturers, forest and plantation owners and sawmills.

The Cluster for Material Studies, at the Institute of Architecture and Design, is a research environment studying and developing material phenomena and performances across architecture and design scales. Our aim is to develop knowledge, methods and demonstrations that impact the ability for architecture and design disciplines to develop aesthetic and sustainable solutions which influence society generally and humans directly through perceived experiences. Our strategy is to study materials in synergetic investigation trajectories of material making, material programming and material perception.

About the position
We are looking for a person with a visionary professional profile committed to delivering results, presenting knowledge and contributing innovative thinking in the area. With a focus on process and method and the inclusion of the latest knowledge and technology, you are expected to be able to contribute cutting-edge knowledge to the field. Our general aim is to strengthen the subject area of advanced analysis and design of wood composites and specifically contribute to the WoodVita research project as part of the dedicated research team. Your duties will include research in the focus area of the position.

Qualifications
As a minimum, you hold a relevant master’s level degree and a PhD or PhD-level scientific qualifications at the starting point of the position.

We also expect that you:

  • Have a background in architecture or design.
  • Have demonstrated previous studies focused on material studies, ideally related to wood species.
  • Have demonstrated previous experiment-led research, ideally related to both digital and physical prototyping.

Salary and terms of employment
The terms of pay and employment will be in accordance with the agreement in force between the Danish Ministry of Finance and a number of organisations under the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) for academic staff in public service. A qualification allowance will be negotiable, depending on your skills and experience.

The position will also be filled in accordance with the applicable job structure for artistic and scientific staff at the Royal Danish Academy – Architecture, Design, Conservation; Aarhus School of Architecture and Design School Kolding – Executive Order No. 1190 of 21 August 2023.

This is a full-time position with an average of 37 working hours per week and includes research. The distribution of your duties may differ as deemed necessary by the Royal Danish Academy, and you may be required to undertake other job-related duties.

The position is a fixed-term appointment that will terminate without further notice after 2 years.

Any secondary occupation is acceptable provided it is compatible with the duties of a postdoc.
