PhD scholarship in innovative rotor-nacelle system design and analysis for modularized blade systems - DTU Wind

Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU)

Are you a curious, self-driven individual with a strong passion for developing sustainable energy solutions? The Department of Wind and Energy Systems at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) invites applications for a PhD position on the innovative rotor-nacelle system design and analysis for modularized blade systems.
Do you want to be involved in the green energy transition? Do you wish to contribute to the development of advanced technologies for next generation of very large and flexible offshore wind turbine rotor and are you looking for a career in R&D or academia? Then we have a great opportunity!

We are looking for a highly motivated and skilled candidate to join us as PhD student.

We offer a multidisciplinary, international, and friendly atmosphere, encouraging creativity and teamwork. You will have a great opportunity to build strong networks with internationally known researchers at DTU and other universities as well as industrial partners.

This project is a part of the NEXTgenT (NEXT generation of over 25MW offshore wind Turbine rotor design) MSCA Doctoral Networks (DN). The overall objective of the NEXTgenT training network is to educate a new generation of researchers capable of converting their new knowledge of atmospheric science and wind turbine technologies into the development of the next generation of 25+MW offshore wind turbine rotor systems. You will work closely together with other 10 PhD students under the NEXTgenT MSCA DN.

You will be affiliated with the Section on Response, Aero-elasticity, Control and Hydrodynamics in the Division of Wind Turbine Design. Our ambition is to develop tools for precise predictions of loads and response for the next generation wind turbines and farms.

Responsibilities
The overall research goal is to develop an innovative blade design with a partial pitch control concept The partial pitch concept has a pitch bearing on the blade unlike a normal pitch concept which has the pitch bearing at the blade root. Individual Pitch Control (IPC) methods can be adapted since only a small part of the blade needs to be pitched. The proposed partial pitch IPC blade may enhance wake mixing capacity resulting in fast wake recovery. Various partial pitch design and control options will be investigated to maximise the load reductions and wake recoveries. Key project elements are:

  • Design several segmented blade elements including pitch system with a MDAO design approach
  • Define optimum pitch bearing and connecter design and position
  • Develop an innovative control method including IPC for maximising the power and minimising the loads with the designed partial pitched rotor
  • Perform detailed load analysis to evaluate its efficiency
  • Analyse the wake recovery capability

A detailed project plan will be developed with the supervisors within the first months after enrolment.

Qualifications
The successful candidate has an MSc degree in a relevant engineering field, computer science or physics, is motivated to specialize in control and response of large and flexible offshore wind turbines and have an experience to perform aeroelastic analyses. Candidates are required to have:

  • Excellent grades in your master program
  • Dedication and the desire to learn
  • Good programming skills
  • Strong theoretical background
  • Knowledge of wind energy and aeroelastic analysis
  • Ability to present results in technical reports and prepare scientific papers
  • Ability to take responsibility for own research goals
  • Fluent in communicating and reporting in English

The successful candidate must also fulfil the requirements for admission to a PhD program at DTU.

You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education.
