For our customer, the European Space Agency (ESA), we are seeking an experienced Telecom System Security Engineer to work at ESA’s ESTEC site in Noordwijk, The Netherlands.

Job description
You will be assigned to ESA/ESTEC’s Systems Security Engineering Section within the Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality.

Responsibilities
Reporting to the Head of Section, you will provide support to the Agency projects and programs in the area of space system security engineering, with an emphasis on space segment, including system security design, definition and implementation of system security requirements, assessment of vulnerabilities applicable to space systems, recommendation of security mitigations and countermeasures.

The specific tasks foreseen are:

• Contribute to the definition, analysis and consolidation of space system security requirements and in particular for space segment.
• Contribute to the definition of security reference architecture for space systems and in particular for space segment.
• Support system reviews through projects’ lifecycle on security aspects.
• Analyse vulnerabilities, assess their impact and propose suitable security mitigations and countermeasures.
• Analyse evidence of fixes of vulnerabilities.
• Assess Requests for Waivers (RFW) / Requests for Deviation (RFD) on security aspects and provide recommendations regarding their acceptability.
• Organise security audits / vulnerability assessment / penetration testing activities on ESA projects and programs and analysing their results (including analysis of evidence of findings and corrections).
• Propose developments needed to enhance the security of space systems and in particular for space segment.
• Assist the ESA Technical Officer on Research and Development activities (in the area of security for space) during their lifecycle (writing the Statement of Work, assessing Industry proposals, supervising the implementation).
• Support Project / System Security Officer (PSSO) or Security Officer (SO).
• Support laboratory activities as required.

Duties may also include supporting other activities within the field of required competences.

This is a full-time position located at ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands.

The requested start of work is November 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.

How to succeed in this position?
The successful candidate shall have:

• Master’s degree / PhD (or equivalent) in an engineering topic, preferably in Cyber Security, Computer Science, Telecommunications Engineering, or Aerospace Engineering.
• At least 4 years relevant experience, ideally acquired in the space industry.
• Strong knowledge and experience in Security Engineering / Cyber Security.
• Knowledge of space systems, space segment architectures, and spacecraft avionics.
• Very good knowledge in security best practices.
• Basic on applied cryptography.
• Knowledge on Information Security Management Systems.
• Knowledge on CCSDS protocols and standards (in particular SDLS).

Desirable:

• Knowledge on RF security is a plus.
