DTU Tenure Track Assistant Professor in Modelling of Energy Conversion Systems - DTU Energy

Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU)

Assistant professor positions in the field of modelling of electrochemical energy conversion devices. Detailed multi-physics modelling at device level as well as plant level is targeted.
If you are establishing your career as scientist and you are looking for the best possible foundation for fulfilling your dreams and ambitions it could well be here right in front of you. At DTU Energy you will break new ground and help to develop the technologies needed for the green transition. Electrochemical processes and various types of energy conversion devices will be key to this.

Electrolysis plants will constitute an essential part of any Power-to-X-scheme to produce green fuels in future as all these will require as a first step the synthesis of Hydrogen. At DTU Energy we pursue R&D in several different electrolysis technologies, among these solid oxide electrolysis and alkaline electrolysis. We also study up-grading processes of the hydrogen to more valuable products like methanol or ammonia that may serve as green fuels.

The intermittent nature of electricity production from wind and sun requires technologies for energy storage at both short and long time scales. This, and the need to electrify transport calls for cheap battery technologies. At DTU Energy we do R&D on novel types of batteries with a special focus on only using elements of high abundance.

Common to these technologies, all based on electrochemical cells, is that their development relies on detailed understanding of the coupled processes taking place during operation. Multi-physics, multi-scale modelling of these mass-, charge- and energy- transfer processes is a strong tool to strengthen such understanding and in suggesting device- and process-improvements.

We are looking for experienced and visionary scientists with strong competences in modelling to assist us in developing improved energy conversion devices and processes for the green transition.

Responsibilities and qualifications
Your main focus will be to strengthen the department’s competences and research within computational modelling of energy conversion devices involving electrochemical cells. This involves continuum type models describing the coupled reactions at electrode- or device-level, with micro-meter resolution, all the way up to descriptions applicable at flow-sheet/balance-of-plant- level. Depending on your background we expect you to contribute to several of below areas:

  • Development of improved methodologies to do multi-scale, multi-physics modelling of the processes in solid oxide electrolysis electrodes, cells, stacks and modules of stacks.
  • Development of improved methodologies to do multi-scale, multi-physics modelling of alkaline, anion-exchange or PEM based electrolysis cells/stacks and stack-modules.
  • Extending model description of electrolysis technologies to include transient operation and degradation phenomena.
  • Development of improved methodologies for techno-economical assessment of novel energy conversion processes and use of such models to improve process design, component architecture and/or plant-lay-out.
  • Development of continuum level models of charge-, dis-charge reactions in solid state or flow batteries.
  • Project management of national and international projects involving modelling tasks.
  • Securing funding for our research on sustainable devices/process for energy conversion and storage.

In carrying out our research we work in project-teams, so besides interacting with colleagues in your own section, you will work together with colleagues from other section specializing on e.g. component manufacture or device testing to carry out the targeted project work. We expect you to contribute to process- and device design improvements, as well as to formulate specific material requirements for novel materials, via the insights gained through your modelling. This could target for example new routes to green ammonia/green methanol and schemes for energy storage.

You must be responsible for the teaching of courses. DTU employs two working languages: Danish and English. You are expected to be fluent in at least one of these languages, and in time are expected to master both.

As formal qualification you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).

You will be assessed against the responsibilities and qualifications stated above and the following general criteria:

  • Experience and quality of teaching
  • Research experience
  • Research vision and potential
  • International impact and experience
  • Societal impact
  • Innovativeness, including commercialization and collaboration with industry
  • Leadership, collaboration, and interdisciplinary skills
  • Communication skills

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The expected starting date will be settled after mutual agreement. We hope for a start around march 1, 2025.

The position is part of DTU’s Tenure Track program. Read more about the program and the recruitment process here.
