ACZM/ECZM Residency in Zoological Medicine

Veterinary Residency in Zoological Medicine
The Copenhagen Zoo, in conjunction with Copenhagen University is offering an ACZM- and ECZM-approved postgraduate residency program designed to produce specialists in the field of zoological medicine. The program is intended to begin in February/March 2025 and will run for 3 years. After a three-month probationary period, reappointment for the second and third year is contingent upon the successful completion of the preceding year.

The individual completing this program will attain a broad clinical base for future employment in a variety of nondomestic animal practices including zoos, wildlife parks, research institutions and universities.

Copenhagen Zoo is a city zoo with a diverse animal collection. Veterinary facilities include, among others, a well-equipped clinic, advanced laboratories, isolation facilities, a necropsy room, digital radiology, ultrasonography and endoscopy. The zoo offers a busy hands-on caseload with multiple opportunities for primary research and interdisciplinary collaboration.

The immediate team consists of four veterinarians, a senior resident, a registered veterinary nurse and a laboratory technician. The resident will also work closely with the zoo’s curatorial and animal care staff and potentially visiting veterinary students or externs. The resident will be based at the Zoo but will have the opportunity to work with the faculty at the Veterinary College at Copenhagen University, and time is planned for externships at other zoological institutions.

Necessary qualifications to enroll in the program include:

    • a DVM degree that allows the applicant to practice veterinary medicine in Denmark.
    • a minimum of 2 years in general clinical practice OR a one-year rotating multi-disciplinary internship in any species (as defined by EBVS).
    • fluency in written and spoken English.
    • willingness to learn Danish. Attendance of Danish classes provided by the Zoo is expected.
    • clinical experience in mixed practice. General clinical competency in a range of taxa (domestic herbivores and carnivores) and disciplines is essential.
    • an interest in veterinary pathology. The resident is the primary prosector for all animal mortalities at the zoo.
    • an excellent academic record.
    • previous research experience and published peer-reviewed publications.
    • a demonstrated commitment to the field of zoo and wildlife medicine.

Priority will be given to candidates who demonstrate the following:

We are a team who enjoy working with each other and value honest communication, cooperation, and a positive attitude. We enjoy our Friday morning breakfast together and feel strongly that work should be a place where people can have fun and feel comfortable while doing what they are passionate about. Above all, we are looking for an enthusiastic individual who can function well in our team and who will rise to the challenge of becoming a specialist in zoo animal medicine. Applicants should be aware that the road to board certification requires hard work, developed organizational and management skills and the ability to cope under pressure.

Application materials should include a curriculum vitae, letter of intent with a statement of career goals, official transcript of veterinary coursework and 3 letters of recommendation.

Applications must be received by November 4th, 2024. Requests for supplementary information should be directed in writing to Dr. Stamos Tahas, Copenhagen Zoo, DK-2000 Frederiksberg, Denmark, [email protected]
