DTU Tenure Track Assistant Professor in Resilience of the Built Environment and Occupant Wellbeing - DTU Sustain

Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU)

We are looking for a candidate with an interest in resilience of buildings and their technical systems, who will contribute to the development and evaluation of HVAC systems that are sustainable, resilient, and energy efficient, and provide comfort to occupants.
At DTU SUSTAIN, we are looking for a candidate in the field of indoor environment, with a focus on occupant wellbeing and the resilience of buildings and their technical systems. Extreme weather events such as heatwaves are becoming increasingly frequent and more severe, posing a threat to the health and safety of people, especially for the susceptible population such as elderly people. Buildings and their technical systems need to protect these occupants from such risks.

The Section for Indoor Environment conducts research to develop design criteria and technical solutions with the purpose of establishing a healthy, comfortable, and productivity-stimulating indoor climate for various people in an energy and resource efficient way. Within this framework, you will carry out research in developing resilient HVAC systems and defining criteria for their evaluation and performance. The focus of your work will be on technical solutions such as personalized HVAC systems and low temperature heating and high temperature cooling systems, as well as the physiological and psychological responses of occupants to the built environment.

The work includes theoretical evaluations, dynamic simulations (either by existing tools or by development of in-house software), experiments in climate chambers and field studies. You will be involved in ongoing national and international projects and expected to contribute actively to these projects.

Responsibilities and qualifications
Your focus will be at developing resilient cooling (and heating) solutions for people. These solutions will be both building-attached and building-detached. You will work with colleagues at DTU and with both academic and industrial partners in Denmark as well as abroad.

Your responsibilities

  • Planning and executing experiments in climate chambers and in buildings.
  • Creating dynamic building simulation models and using those models for carrying out parametric studies. You may be required to develop new models of certain HVAC system components.
  • Disseminate research findings in articles in scientific journals, through conference papers and oral presentations, and in professional journals.
  • Contribute with innovative research ideas and be actively involved in efforts for acquiring research funding.

Qualifications

  • Able to work independently, plan and execute complicated and challenging tasks related to the scientific field.
  • Flexible, self-motivated, interested in collaboration and takes personal responsibility for your work.
  • Ability to function in an international environment and being open to working with other colleagues.
  • Experience in evaluating indoor environmental quality and HVAC system performance by means of climate chamber measurements and simulations.
  • Experience in planning and executing measurement campaigns in the field, including subjective evaluations using questionnaires and their analysis using statistical methods.
  • Experience in using dynamic building simulation tools for indoor environment and energy performance assessment of buildings (knowledge of and experience with TRNSYS or IDA ICE is an advantage).
  • Knowledge in personalized environmental control systems and low temperature heating and high temperature cooling systems in buildings, especially radiant heating and cooling systems.
  • A PhD-degree within an indoor environment or building science related field.

You must be responsible for the teaching of courses. DTU employs two working languages: Danish and English. You are expected to be fluent in at least one of these languages, and in time are expected to master both.

As formal qualification you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).

You will be assessed against the responsibilities and qualifications stated above and the following general criteria:

  • Experience and quality of teaching
  • Research experience
  • Research vision and potential
  • International impact and experience
  • Societal impact
  • Innovativeness, including commercialization and collaboration with industry
  • Leadership, collaboration, and interdisciplinary skills
  • Communication skills

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.
