DTU Tenure Track Researcher in Geomagnetic Field Modelling - DTU Space

Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU)

Researcher position at DTU Space with focus on use of satellite and ground-based magnetic field observations to develop advanced global models of Earth’s magnetic field.
DTU Space invites applications for a tenure-track researcher position on the topic of Geomagnetic Field Modelling. This position will enable you to take advantage of the latest satellite observations and advances in computational modelling to drive forward our knowledge of Earth’s magnetic field, and to further our understanding of the underlying processes in the ionosphere, magnetosphere, and interior of the Earth. The division of Geomagnetism and Geospace at DTU Space is renowned for its pioneering work on the Earth’s magnetic field, which pushes the boundaries of both fundamental research and practical applications.

Responsibilities and qualifications
Your overall focus will be on the development of the next generation of DTU’s world leading global geomagnetic field model. This will involve designing and investigating new forward modelling and inversion strategies, software implementation, and applications to satellite and ground-based magnetic field measurements, including from ESA’s Swarm satellite trio and similar missions. A particular focus will be on improved descriptions of the magnetic field caused by ionospheric currents. You will publish descriptions and results of new modelling techniques, and applications to the Earth. You will present your research at international conferences. You will communicate effectively with colleagues and be able to work as part of a team to achieve ambitious goals. You will also contribute to research-based teaching and running student projects in DTU’s Earth and Space Physics and Engineering study programme.

For this position the following skills are essential

  • You must have experience working with satellite and ground-based magnetic field data
  • You must have expertise in geomagnetic field modelling techniques
  • You must have expertise in Python code development and testing
  • You must have demonstrated the ability to publish at the highest-level in the international peer-reviewed research literature
  • You must have presentation skills appropriate for communicating research findings at international conferences
  • Passion to work on complex, challenging topics
  • Ability to thrive on collaboration and teamwork

You must contribute to the teaching of courses. DTU employs two working languages: Danish and English. You are expected to be fluent in at least one of these languages, and in time are expected to master both.

As formal qualification you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).

You will be assessed against the responsibilities and qualifications stated above and the following general criteria:

  • Research experience
  • Experience and quality of teaching
  • Research vision and potential
  • International impact and experience
  • Societal impact
  • Innovativeness, including commercialization and collaboration with industry
  • Leadership, collaboration, and interdisciplinary skills
  • Communication skills

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The position is part of DTU’s Tenure Track program. Read more about the program and the recruitment process here.
