Danish Red Cross in Malawi
The Danish Red Cross is leading a consortium that supports Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS) in the implementation of the ‘Community Resilience Programme’ which is implemented in the Southern Malawi. The programme has an integrated programming approach encompassing Health, WASH, Disaster Management, Empowerment of the most vulnerable & Youth and National Society Development. We also support MRCS with Disaster Risk Reduction/Anticipatory Action and Response projects. A general focus is on strengthening the capacity of MRCS. As an intern you will be supporting the Danish Red Cross Country Office (CO) on various aspects of cross-cutting project activities and especially support the Disaster Risk Reduction/Anticipatory Action and Response projects. You will learn about the work of DRC in Malawi and receive ongoing supervision and support by the DRC Programme Delegates/Staff and Country Manager.
Your main tasks include:
The purpose of the internship is to support to the Danish Red Cross and Consortium office at Malawi Red Cross Society in terms of:
- Support planning and coordinate cross-cutting project activities and events specifically related with Disaster Risk Management (DRM), including Anticipatory Acton (AA) and Information Management (IM) activities.
- Assist in preparing cross-cutting project training and learning events and capacity building initiatives.
- Support planning, monitoring, evaluation and reporting (PMER), including data collection and analysis.
- Support communication, including development of communication strategies and content plans.
- Write communication stories, videos, “sunshine stories” and regular stories/reports for Malawi Country Office social media pages, from Malawi.
- Support trainings and workshops, especially related to technical areas such as DRM, AA and IM.
- Support the day-to-day cross-cutting activities of the Danish Red Cross and Consortium office in Malawi.
We expect
We expect that you are driven and service minded with capacity to take initiatives and work independently. You are structured, well organized and resourceful with a genuine interest in development and humanitarian work, and wanting to become a part of the Red Cross Red Crescent movement. We also expect you are receptive, that you are interested in learning from and working closely together with local actors, and that you with curiosity engage proactively in different project activities. We prefer that you through your studies or experience have knowledge of international humanitarian work and/or insight into partnership projects, and that you have volunteer experience.

We believe that you fit this position, if
- Fluent in English and Danish.
- Enrolled at university, for an academic degree in e.g. social science, disaster management, political science, African studies, development studies or similar.
- Believe in and adhere to the Red Cross Red Crescent 7 fundamental principles
- Previous experience working with the Red Cross/Crescent movement and/or other humanitarian organisation is an advantage.
- Documented experience from working with organisational development, as well as programme design and monitoring.
- Excellent report writing and communication skills to be disseminated in both professional and non-academic language.
- Cultural sensitivity and experience in participatory methods and planning of fieldwork.
- As a person you are result oriented with a cultural sensitivity. You have an ability to both listen and facilitate dialogues with a flexible approach adapting your way of working depending on the culture and capacities.
- Highly adaptable to new environments and comfortable with significant changes to standards of living, such as sharing home environment with others, fluctuations in water, electricity and internet access, as well as restricted access to comforts reliable transportation or habitual foods.
- Resilient, ability to cope with a variety of stressors such as changes in temperatures, climate or workload, in a self-reliant manner.
- Compliant to rules and regulations set out by the organizations, for example (but not limited to) Code of Conduct, Principles and guidelines and local security protocols

You will get to work alongside professionals who are experts in their field and gain valuable and relevant work experience within a dynamic workplace. At the same time, an internship with the Danish Red Cross in Malawi will provide you with an opportunity to apply what you have learned during your academic programme in a challenging, yet inspiring setting.
The internships begin in January 2025 and ends in June 2025 and runs for about 6 months. The weekly hours are 37. The internship is unpaid, however one round trip air ticket, accommodation, vaccinations and insurance are covered by the Danish Red Cross. Before arriving at the internship, a thorough on-boarding by the Danish Red Cross will be undertaking in Denmark and online.
