Would you like to be part of our specialist services group, who have been providing engineering support to space agencies and prime contractors for more than 40 years?

For our customer, the European Space Agency (ESA), we are seeking an experienced Infrastructure Engineer to work at ESA’s ESTEC site in Noordwijk, The Netherlands.

Job description
You will be a key member of Terma’s IT team integrated into the customer responsible for supporting ESTEC’s technical facilities and developing software applications in the Technical and Quality Management Directorate (D/TEC).

Responsibilities
As Infrastructure Engineer and reporting to the Service Manager you will be responsible for installing, maintaining, and supporting windows, linux server and workstation infrastructure for ESTEC’s technical laboratory infrastructure.. In your daily work you will interface with ESA engineers to define requirements, test and then deploy solutions, and provide user support in the operations phase. In this you may need to liaise with external equipment providers on behalf of ESA.

The tasks to be performed are:

  • Installation and maintenance of laboratory IT infrastructure, including the planning, coordination and execution of the maintenance and evolution activities.
  • IT Technical support for the operations and maintenance of laboratory equipment and facilities (e.g. workstations, scientific equipment, etc).
  • Periodic maintenance of the server infrastructure (plan and perform OS patches and upgrades) and associated user support and coordination.
  • Installations, migration, and replacement of servers (physical and virtual) in order to maintain an up-to-date server infrastructure.
  • Identification of improvement opportunities.

This is a full-time position located at ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands.
The foreseen start of work is March 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter.

How to succeed in this position?
The successful candidate shall have:

  • A university degree (minimum Bachelor) in IT, Software Engineering, Computer Science, or similar. Professional IT certifications in place of a Master’s degree also acceptable.
  • At least 4 years relevant professional working experience, ideally in an international working environment.
  • Experience with 1st and 2nd line user support, ideally in a large technical/engineering/R&D environment.
  • Experience with heterogenous IT environments – Windows and Unix/Linux.
  • Experience with Windows and/or Linux server administration.
  • Knowledge of IT Security aspect e.g. identity management.
  • Knowledge of network protocols (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, NTP).
  • Must be capable of handling project-based IT activities i.e.
    • Capture requirements (by talking to customers)
    • Estimate project time
    • Creating architecture, network topology (if applicable)
    • Installation and configuration
    • Handover
    • Support
    • Decommissioning

Desirable:

  • Experience with software development, deployment, and operational support (DevOps).
  • Experience with CI/CD and associated tools e,g, Git, Azure DevOps.
  • Prior experience with Matlab/Simulink, LabVIEW .
  • Experience with automation tools (ansible/salt/puppet etc).
  • Prior knowledge and experience with ESA and/or space industry would be an asset.

Soft skills:

  • Service orientation and ability to liaise with (engineering) end-users, other IT teams, security officers etc.
  • Capability to plan and work according to deadlines.
  • Have ability to troubleshoot, research, and work through complex problems.
  • Self-driven as well as an organised team player.
  • Possess excellent English language skills.
  • Are a passionate and curious techie who loves to learn and identify with the wider ESA mission.
