The Danish Cancer Institute (DCI) is seeking 1-2 highly motivated Grants Officers to join our new Funding and Strategy team. The ideal candidate has a scientific background and experience with attraction of research funding and potentially project management of European or other large international grants. We offer a job working closely with DCI’s researchers, in a collaborative environment and good possibilities to develop professionally.

About us

As an integral part of the Danish Cancer Society, DCI is working to reduce cancer risks, advance early diagnostics, develop novel therapeutic solutions, and improve patients’ lives. We function as a cross-collaborative cancer research institute with an interdisciplinary and translational agenda, grounded in robust research within basic biology and epidemiology. DCI features 23 research groups, five core facilities and a secretariat with four teams, including the Funding and Strategy team. We are around 300 employees, from 29 countries.

The role
The core of the positions is within pre-award grant support. This involves close interactions and collaboration with DCI’s researchers to match them with potential funding sources and help them develop competitive grant applications. The primary responsibilities include:

  • Advise DCI researchers on opportunities and conditions for external funding of research.
  • Coordinate internal peer reviews and give application feedback.
  • Manage contact with national and international foundations.
  • Help develop larger applications for the European Research Council, the Innovation Foundation Denmark, the National Research Foundation etc.
  • Co-develop new applications to EU with focus on the Marie S. Curie programme (partner matchmaking, write specific sections, help illustrate the applications etc.).
  • Potentially organise grant writing workshops for postdocs.

Dependent on DCI’s strategic focus and needs, and the candidate’s profile, additional tasks may include contributing to researcher training activities (PhD and postdocs), project management of a larger national or international project (e.g. Horizon Europe), including organizing events, reporting, overseeing science-related aspects such as Open Science, ethics and data management etc. and general management support, incl. preparing analyses, handling indicators, committee work etc.

The role of professional research managers and administrators are becoming increasingly acknowledged and besides side-by-side training, training opportunities for the role is available through a number of national and international organisations (e.g. DARMA and EARMA). You will refer to the head of the Funding and Strategy team.

Your profile
Professional experiences:

  • A PhD-degree in the life sciences, e.g. within biology, biomedicine, epidemiology or related fields and preferably own research experience at e.g. postdoc level
  • Knowledge of the current research funding landscape, including EU’s framework programme Horizon Europe
  • Experience with attraction of competitive funding, either personally or in a preaward support position.
  • Experience with establishing and managing collaborations, partnerships, or consortia.
  • Experience in project management of European or other international grants and/or in organizing scientific meetings, training events, or alike.

Competences:

  • Analytical, proactive and with a problem-solving attitude.
  • Excellent communication skills in English (written as well as verbal) and an ability to explain complex concepts in simple and convincing terms.
  • Well-organized with both a helicopter perspective and attention to detail.
  • Service-minded, open and able to build trust.
  • Good team player, with an organisational understanding and ability to work with different stakeholders
  • Competences in Office 365 and the ability to learn new administrative support systems.

We work with many deadlines and are periodically very busy, why an ability to focus, prioritize, and work intensively up to deadlines is a prerequisite to thrive in the position.

Working hours are 37 hours/week incl. lunch and you will receive salary and pension in accordance with the current agreement between the Danish Cancer Society and the relevant professional organization. You will have your daily walk at Strandboulevarden 49 in Copenhagen Ø, where there is a canteen, fruit scheme, active sports and art association.

First round of interviews is expected to take place January 21st-22nd 2025, and second round interviews on January 27th 2025. There will be preparation of a case between first and second round of interviews. We want the position filled preferably March 1st, 2025.
