Mechanical Engineer (SY-STI-TCD-2025-193-GRAP)

CERN - The European Research Center of Particle Physics

Employment Type: Full-time

The successful candidate will be responsible for the analysis and design of various beam intercepting devices for the FCCee study, including collaboration with P3 on the positron source, as well as work on lepton and beamstrahlung dumps, depending on the project priorities. The activity will also include development of the radiation shielding for the FCCee main dipole system.

Your responsibilities
This role will involve:

  • Define, analyse and verify complex numerical models to assess the performance of beam-intercepting devices under thermo-mechanical forces.
  • Use Implicit and Explicit Finite Element solvers, such as LS-Dyna and ANSYS, to conduct these analyses.
  • Where components of these devices need to be cooled, the candidate will also perform Computational Fluid Dynamics and thermal analysis to assess the effectiveness of different cooling concepts.
  • Prototyping and testing activities aimed at developing and optimising mechanical components.
  • Where needed, commission material characterisation studies and explore manufacturing techniques in collaboration with internal and external partners.

More information here.

Your profile

  • Demonstrated ability to perform, interpret and validate Finite Element and Computational Fluid Dynamics analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to propose and implement robust verification, validation and quality control measures for designs and simulations.
  • Practical experience of manufacturing processes, logistics of mass production and process optimisation.

Skills:

  • Strong technical understanding of mechanical engineering principles, with expertise in mechanics of solid materials, fluids, heat transfer, and material science.
  • Strong organisational skills, with attention to detail and the ability to clearly articulate and structure plans, specifications and analysis work.
  • Excels in working effectively within multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural teams.
  • Skilled in writing technical and scientific documents.
  • Spoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French.

Eligibility criteria:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • You have a professional background in Mechanical Engineering (or related) (or a related field) and have either:
    • a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;
    • or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.

Additional Information
Job closing date: 04.12.2025 at 23:59 CET.
Contract duration: 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.

Working hours: 40 hours per week

Job flexibility: Fully Onsite

Target start date: 01-February-2026

This position involves:

  • Work in Radiation Areas.
  • Exposure to lead.

Given the occupational health risks associated with this position, the selected candidate must obtain medical clearance before a contract offer is confirmed.

About us
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.
