Assistant of Department Safety Officer (EP-DI-SO-2025-195-GRAP)

Your responsibilities:
The candidate will join the Safety Office team within the Physics department (EP-DI) as Assistant DSO (Department Safety Officer).

Between others, the Safety Office team is in charge of proposing and monitoring the implementation of appropriate safety measures to ensure the compliance of installations, activities and projects under the responsibility of the department with the CERN Safety Rules and best practices.

In particular, as Assistant DSO, the candidate will support the Safety Office in:

  • Carrying on risk assessments for EP activities/installations (in experimental areas, laboratories, workshops, etc.) and following up the implementation of the related control measures.
  • Performing safety inspections for EP activities/installations and coordinating specific technical inspections with experts from various domains.
  • Supporting the activities supervisors in creating the safety documentation (as operation and maintenance procedures or descriptive files) and in keeping up to date the related Safety File.
  • Creating incident analysis reports and follow up the resolution of the related action plan.
  • Participating to periodic meetings related to safety matters and interact with other Safety Officers and stakeholders.

Any specific knowledge in a certain safety domain (fire, chemical, cryogenic, etc.) could be translated into the role of a Specialised Safety Officer, to support the Safety Office in the assessments related with that domain.

Your profile:
Skills:

  • Knowledge of the occupational safety domain.
  • Experience in performing risk assessments, incident analysis reports, safety inspections.
  • Specific knowledge in a certain safety domain (fire, chemical, cryogenic, radiation protection, etc.) would be an advantage.
  • Ability to work in a team.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Spoken and written English or French, with a commitment to learn the other language.

Eligibility criteria:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • You have a professional background in Engineering or Physics (or a related field) and have either:
    • a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;
    • or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.

Additional Information
Job closing date: 18.01.2026 at 23:59 CET.
Contract duration: 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.

Working hours: 40 hours per week

Target start date: 01-March-2026

This position involves:

  • Work in Radiation Areas.
  • Interventions in underground installations.
  • A valid driving licence.
  • Exposure to electromagnetic fields under certain exposure conditions.

Given the occupational health risks associated with this position, the selected candidate must obtain medical clearance before a contract offer is confirmed.
