PhD Stipend/Integrated PhD Stipend in Mathematical/Computational Methods for Cavitating Flows and Noise Propagation

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Mathematical Sciences, a PhD stipend or integrated PhD is available within the PhD study program Mathematics, Physics and Computational Sciences. The stipend is open for appointment from 1.9.2024 or soon hereafter.

Jobbeskrivelse
This position is an integral part of an innovative project aimed at creating a Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) model to study cavitating flows and their noise propagation. The project's goal is to address the issue of underwater radiated noise(URN), primarily caused by ship propellers, contributing significantly to marine pollution. Collaborating with MAN-ES, a leading ship propeller manufacturer, and supported by funding from the Danish Maritime Fund and Orient Fonden, this project seeks to make substantial strides in mitigating URN's environmental impact. For more details about the project, please visit the Danish Maritime Fund's page: https://dendanskemaritimefond.dk/aalborg-universitet-towards-better-quantification-of-underwater-radiated-noise-a-population-balance-model-for-cavitating-flows-and-noise/.

As a PhD candidate, you will engage in the development of a novel cavitating flow model, addressing the challenges of interfacial phase transition effects across multiple temporal and spatial scales. This position will predominantly focus on the theoretical aspects of multiphase flows and their implementation. Hands-on CFD simulations will be limited to validation and benchmark purposes. In particular, you will contribute to:

  • Developing a cavitation kernel function for population-balance equations
  • Implementing the cavitation model in a finite-volume CFD framework
  • Coupling of the developed cavitation model with acoustic radiation models, validating against experimental data.

Required Qualifications

  • A relevant educational background within Mathematics, Physics, or Engineering, with a strong background in partial differential equations, preferably in fluid mechanics
  • Programming experience in C++ and/or Python

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with numerical methods for solving partial differential equations
  • Experience in parallelizing numerical codes and Blas/Lapack libraries
  • Multiphase modelling in Computational Fluid Dynamics

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.

Integrated PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who has not yet completed a Master's degree and who wish to begin the PhD study in connection with the Master study. Thus a prerequisite for acceptance is that the candidate is enrolled in a relevant AAU Master's programme, such as Mathematics, Physics, or Engineering. The integrated stipend consists of two parts, A and B. During part A you are enrolled simultaneous in the Master's programme and in the PhD programme. The stipend consists of two SU-PhD Grants per month(SU=The Danish students' Grants and Loans Scheme). One SU-PhD grant equals DKK 6820(2024 level). SU-PhD Grants are paid fora maximum of two years. When the Master's degree has been obtained, you will be employed for two years as a PhD fellow according to the present collective agreement. Part B has a maximum duration of two years.

You may obtain further information from Associate Professor Anton Evgrafov, Department of Mathematical Sciences, [email protected] concerning the scientific aspects of the stipend.
