The Department of Computer Science at the University of Copenhagen has a vision to strategically expand our department to maintain and expand our national and international leadership in computer science. We are looking for both Tenure-Track Assistant Professors, Associate Professors and Full Professors within all areas of Computer Science. The position is open from 1 August 2025 or later.

It is a high priority at our department to foster a research environment of the highest quality allowing people from diverse backgrounds to thrive. You will join a rapidly growing department with strong research sections in the areas of Human-Centred Computing; Algorithms and Complexity; Machine Learning; Natural Language Processing; Software, Data, People, and Society; Programming Languages and Theory of Computing; Artificial Intelligence; and Image Analysis, Computational Modeling, and Geometry. We are heading multiple centres within computer science, including the SCIENCE AI Center and the Pioneer Center for Artificial Intelligence.

About the Department of Computer Science
Our department was founded in 1970 as part of the University of Copenhagen – the oldest and largest university in Denmark; founded in 1479 with more than 10.000 employees. The university is ranked number 2 in the European Union according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2023.

Our research in Computer Science is at the forefront of the field, and our interdisciplinary collaborations cover a broad range of societally important areas, emphasizing research in both theoretical and applied areas. One focus of the department is investigating how we, ethically and efficiently, can shape future digital technologies and ensure that they are adapted to the needs of people and society. Description of the position
As a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor you will primarily tend to your research and research-based teaching, while also focusing on publishing and scientific communication in various forms. To a limited extent the position may also include other tasks. The Faculty of Science has a tenure track program in place aiming at mentoring tenure-track assistant professors towards tenure, and the department has instituted a reduced teaching load for tenure-track assistant professors to give them time to obtain the requisite pedagogical certifications.

As an Associate and Full Professor, you will tend your own research while simultaneously working to develop the field of research. Other work includes assessment tasks, grant applications, and research management, such as supervision and training of research fellows and other staff. You will also teach, supervise bachelor and master students, prepare, and participate in examinations, and fulfill other tasks requested by the department.

Qualifications
Tenure-Track Assistant Professor

You should show an increasing publication trajectory in high-level international peer-reviewed venues in the area of specialization. Your research plans and publication records should illustrate a clear potential for development and attraction of external funding. Documented university-level experience in delivering high-quality undergraduate/graduate teaching is not mandatory, but weighs positively in the application. If you do not already hold formal pedagogical qualifications, you will receive pedagogical training equivalent to the University of Copenhagen Teaching and Learning in Higher Education program for Assistant Professors.

Associate Professor
The position requires a comprehensive publication record in high-level international peer-reviewed venues in the area of specialization as well as a track record of successful external research funding. An extensive network of international collaborations will be considered a very important asset. You are expected to have university-level competencies in delivering high-quality undergraduate/graduate teaching and will be required to explain and reflect upon your own teaching practice and portfolio. You are expected to have formal pedagogical training or supervision equivalent to the University of Copenhagen Teaching and Learning in Higher Education program. You are also expected to have managerial qualifications, for example in organizing your own research group and performing outreach activities.

Full Professor
You are expected to have a significant publication record in high-level international peer-reviewed venues in the area of specialization, a solid history of attracting significant external research funding, and an extensive international network of research collaborators. You are also required to have university-level competencies in delivering high-quality undergraduate/graduate teaching and will be required to explain and reflect upon your own teaching practice and portfolio, as well as participate in strategic teaching planning. You are expected to have formal pedagogical training or supervision equivalent to the University of Copenhagen Teaching and Learning in Higher Education program. You are expected to have significant managerial experience, for instance, in positions of service to your institution or to the community, experience in running competitive research group, as well as outreach experience.

Terms of employment
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff. Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.

Negotiation for salary supplement and relocation expenses is possible.

Denmark protects the economic, social, and physical well-being of its workers, which includes public health care, elder care, and other generous benefits. Work-life balance is ranked high, and all employees get six weeks of paid annual vacation. A standard work week in Denmark is 37 hours.

We consider six overall criteria for appointments at the University of Copenhagen: research, teaching, societal impact, organizational contribution, external funding, and leadership. The Tenure-Track Programme
If you are hired as Tenure-Track Assistant Professor, you will be assigned a mentor who will provide you with advice related to your career development, academic topics, and administrative procedures. In addition, you will have yearly meetings with the head of department to help you with your progress.

Your progression will be featuring a mid-term and final international evaluation by an assessment committee. The mid-term evaluation typically takes place after three years of employment, and the final evaluation no later than after 6 years of employment. After the 6-year period, you are expected to meet the criteria for appointment of Associate Professors at the University of Copenhagen. Performance and progression towards the criteria will be evaluated with due consideration of differences between research fields. Upon a positive final appraisal, you will be promoted to Associate Professor, which is a permanent position.
