Postdoc in Experimental Quantum Random Number Generation – DTU Physics

Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU)

You are passionate about working at the absolute forefront of quantum technology? Here is the opportunity for you to fulfil your dreams and ambitions! Random numbers have many applications, from cybersecurity to simulations to gambling. Since measurements in quantum physics deliver random outcomes, quantum random number generators (QRNGs) deliver the best randomness of all physics-based generators.

Device dependent solutions, i.e. generators whose devices are rigorously mathematically modelled, deliver unparalleled performance, while semi-device independent and device-independent generators usually trade speed with security improvements. We are experimentally working on light-based generators measuring the quadrature fields of light.

Within this position you will advance QRNGs by demonstrating improved protocols developed together with theoreticians in the Innovation Fund Denmark Grand Solutions project TripleQ. As part of your work, you will be exploring semi-device independent and device-independent QRNG implementations.

The position will be hosted by the Section of Quantum Physics and Information Technology (QPIT) at the Department of Physics of the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and will be in close collaboration with Alea Quantum Technologies, a spin-off of DTU developing QRNGs. We are a dynamic, innovative and diverse research team focused on continuous-variable quantum communication. Our team is passionate about advancing secure communication based on quantum physics. We have a wide range of academic and industry collaborations, e.g. as part of the EU Flagship on quantum technology and the European Quantum Communication Infrastructure.

Responsibilities and qualifications
We are looking for a highly motivated candidate who will conduct experimental research in advanced (continuous-variable) quantum random number generators. You will

  • implement experiments in the lab demonstrating device-dependent, semi-device independent and device-independent quantum random number generation
  • explore photonic integrated solutions using chips developed by partners

You have a passion for continuous-variable quantum optics, and you are intrigued by its application in quantum random number generation. You enjoy finding clever solutions to difficult problems and further you have the following qualifications:

  • Experimental experience with optical continuous-variable quantum technology
  • Experience with python programming
  • Experience with fiber optic setups and/or setups with photonic integrated chips
  • You thrive by working in a diverse and multidisciplinary team of people

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).

We offer
DTU is a leading technical university globally recognized for the excellence of its research, education, innovation and scientific advice. We strive for academic excellence in an environment characterized by collegial respect and academic freedom tempered by responsibility.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The period of employment is 2 years. Expected starting date is 1t October 2024 (or according to mutual agreement). The position is a full-time position.

Application procedure
Your complete online application must be submitted no later than 10 July 2024 (23:59 Danish time). Applications must be submitted as one PDF file containing all materials to be given consideration. To apply, please open the link "Apply now", fill out the online application form, and attach all your materials in English in one PDF file. The file must include:

  • Application (cover letter)
  • CV
  • Academic Diplomas (MSc/PhD – in English)
  • List of publications

Applications received after the deadline will not be considered.

All interested candidates irrespective of age, gender, disability, race, religion or ethnic background are encouraged to apply.

DTU Physics is a modern department with an emphasis on strong professionalism. We want to be elitist in physics and we demand a lot of our employees and students. We focus on research, teaching, and innovation in areas with fundamental challenges and application potentials. We cover areas such as surface physics, materials science, computer-based material calculations, fluid dynamics, biophysics, plasma physics, and quantum physics, and we encourage collaboration between the areas. Applications range from sustainable energy and the materials of the future to quantum technology.

Technology for people
DTU develops technology for people. With our international elite research and study programmes, we are helping to create a better world and to solve the global challenges formulated in the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Hans Christian Ørsted founded DTU in 1829 with a clear mission to develop and create value using science and engineering to benefit society. That mission lives on today. DTU has 13,500 students and 6,000 employees. We work in an international atmosphere and have an inclusive, evolving, and informal working environment. DTU has campuses in all parts of Denmark and in Greenland, and we collaborate with the best universities around the world.
