Postdoc in Exploring Color Centers and their Applications in Quantum Sensing – DTU Physics

Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU)

Are you fascinated by quantum technologies? Would you like to explore the potential of quantum sensing with color centers, develop new sensing modalities and apply these in biology or material sciences?
Are you fascinated by the potential of quantum technologies, in particular quantum sensing with quantum coherent color centers in the solid state? Would you like to explore new color centers, determine their fundamental limits and use these for real-world applications?

The section for quantum physics and information technology (QPIT) at the Department of Physics, Technical University of Denmark (DTU Physics) is seeking highly motivated candidates for postdoc positions within experimental quantum technologies. We offer several projects related to color centers in the solid state and their applications in emerging quantum technologies.

We offer suggested projects that can be shaped and developed in collaboration with your ideas and expertise:

  • Discovery and application of color centers in 2D materials: together with collaborators in theoretical and experimental material sciences, you will work on the discovery of new color centers in wide-bandgap 2D materials, and explore their potential for quantum sensing.
  • Development of protocols for quantum sensing in the high-frequency domain: Focus on developing new sensing modalities using nitrogen-vacancy color centers in diamond. Your work will target high-frequency quantum sensing applications, such as probing electron-spin dynamics at the molecular scale, with potential impacts on fields like molecular biology and materials science.
  • Exploring the charge dynamics for quantum sensing: Investigate and control the charge dynamics of diamond color centers using optical techniques. This project aims to improve spin readout efficiency, applying these advancements to quantum sensing at the molecular scale. Potential applications include enhanced detection of molecular structures and chemical processes.

These projects are just the beginning. We encourage your innovative ideas and look forward to developing these research areas further in collaboration with you.

The candidates will be enrolled in the QPIT section at DTU Physics and affiliated with the national center of excellence for macroscopic quantum states, bigQ as well as the recently established Novo Nordic Centre for Biomedical Quantum Sensing. All projects will be carried out in close collaboration with national and international collaborators in the areas of material sciences, quantum sensing, neuroscience and biology.

Responsibilities
You will be a key person in international research projects, and you will be main responsible for continued development of the respective experimental platform. You will work in close collaboration with other team members and collaborators, and you are expected to be pro-active in implementing and testing new ideas. Your research will be instrumental for our future ability to conduct quantum sensing.

We expect the successful candidates to possess a combination of interests and skills, ranging from general control of experimental techniques, data analysis, optical microscopy, solid-state and quantum physics. Depending on your prior experience and training needs, we will sharpen your skills and provide you with opportunities to develop as a scientist. You will contribute with solutions and suggestions that can bring the entire research team closer to the overall vision of the project.

You are ambitious; possess a strong internal drive and perseverance as well as a sincere interest in applied quantum science, in particular quantum sensing. You have demonstrated academic excellence and/or remarkable scientific achievements. You are ambitious and you enjoy working well both in a group, with other team members as well as on your own.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent in optical/electrical engineering or physics. In addition to that, as an ideal candidate you offer:

  • experience with the construction and operation of advanced experimental setups, especially within microscopy or quantum sensing
  • experience with programming languages such as Python for hardware control and data processing,
  • great self-motivation and the ability to make “things work”, and
  • experience or interest in cell biology and single cell microscopy

We offer
DTU is a leading technical university globally recognized for the excellence of its research, education, innovation and scientific advice. We offer a rewarding and challenging job in an international environment. We strive for academic excellence in an environment characterized by collegial respect and academic freedom tempered by responsibility.
