Part-time Assistant Professor of Organic Geochemistry at Globe Institute, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen

We are looking for a highly motivated and dynamic assistant professor (25% FTE), who will lead the area of biomarker analysis in the section of Ecology and Evolution for a 2-year position to commence 1 September 2024 or as soon as possible hereafter.

The position includes research in human-environment interactions through the analysis of lipid biomarkers. The subject areas comprehend paleoenvironmental reconstructions, ancient lipids in archaeological material and ancient microbiomes among others. Preferentially, the candidate should have experience from biomarker analysis applied to archaeology.

You will be joining the section for Molecular Ecology and Evolution that operates across the fields of evolutionary biology and molecular ecology. We apply quantitative methods to biological questions that are fundamental to our understanding of ecology and evolution in the context of the global challenges we face today. Your job
You will be contributing to exciting projects seeking to understand the paleoclimate and its relationship with humans in the past. You are also expected to lead and manage the Lipid biomarker laboratory and train new users. Our new Lipid biomarker laboratory is fully equipped with cutting edge technology for the analysis of lipids and biomarkers in sediment and archaeological samples.
The assistant professor’s responsibilities will primarily consist of:

  • research, including publication/academic dissemination duties
  • research-based teaching
  • sharing knowledge with society
  • participation in formal pedagogical training programme for assistant professors

Furthermore, we are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic scientist with the following skills and experience:

Essential experience and skills

  • You have a PhD in Earth Sciences, Analytical Chemistry, Archaeosciences or related.
  • You have documented experience in lipid biomarker analysis and GC-MS.
  • You have an active interest in Paleoenvironmental and Biomarker lipid analysis applied to Archaeology.
  • You have proven an ability to envision, plan and execute a research project
  • Good English skills, written and spoken

Desirable experience and skills

  • Experience and knowledge in biomarker data analysis and MassHunter software analysis.
  • Experience working in interdisciplinary research teams.
  • Service-minded

The assistant professor’s duties will primarily include research, including obligations with regard to publication/scientific communication and research-based teaching with associated examination obligations within landscape architecture, landscape technologies and nature-based solutions. To a limited extent this may also include performance of other duties.

Terms of employment
The average weekly working hours are 9,25 hours per week.

The employment as Assistant Professor is a 25% FTE for 2 years. Starting date is September 1st, 2024.

Salary, pension and other conditions of employment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Taxation and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant organisation. Currently, the monthly salary starts at 9,643.75 DKK/approx. 1,275 EUR (April 2024 level) at 9,25 hours per week. Depending on qualifications, a supplement may be negotiated. The employer will pay an additional 17.1 % to your pension fund.

Foreign and Danish applicants may be eligible for tax reductions if they hold a PhD degree and have not lived in Denmark the last 10 years.

The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities 2020.

    The further process
