Postdoc in detection and quantification of fugitive emissions - DTU Sustain

DTU Sustain is hiring a post-doctoral fellow within detection and quantification of fugitive emissions. It is an opportunity to participate in development and testing of methods to further our possibilities for accurate measurements with the aim to monitor greenhouse gas emissions.
DTU Sustains section Climate and Monitoring offers a 2½-year position as a post-doctoral fellow in detection and quantification of fugitive greenhouse gas emissions.

You will be a part of a larger project focusing on innovations in remote sensing for better measurement of greenhouse gas emissions, which is a collaboration with DTU Electro, manufacturers of laser products, leading providers of gas measurement services and consultants with a global outreach.

The problem addressed is direct emissions of greenhouse gases from industries, utilities, agriculture etc. Minimizing those emissions is of great importance in the effort to mitigate climate change. To minimize direct emissions, accurate and cost-effective measurement methods and instruments are needed to evaluate emissions from various processes, components etc. and to inform facilities in case of defects, which cause increased emissions. We will develop and test both vehicle-based, drone-based and fence-line monitoring applications of laser detection of gaseous emissions from various sources.

KhaosGuard is a 4-year project supported by Innovation Fund Denmark’s Grand Solutions program. The project so far has been in a development phase. You will enter the project in the beginning of the testing phase, where we will conduct the first tests at different facilities such as wastewater treatment plants.

Responsibilities and qualifications
The successful candidate will develop, test and apply our measurement systems as part of a team at DTU Sustain of senior scientists and technicians, other young scientists and PhD students.

In addition, you will collaborate with another, similar team at DTU Electro, who are developing the equipment used.

Scientific programming (for example using R and/or Python) will be needed for process automation for organization of data streams and post-processing chains.

Your primary tasks will be to:

  • Perform and evaluate measurements in laboratory and field environments
  • Perform data analysis and error assessments
  • Teach and supervise BSc and MSc students working on related projects
  • Participate in the further development of DTU Sustains’ capabilities to detect and quantify fugitive emissions
  • Dissemination of results in scientific journals and at conferences and

We imagine that you have an education in environmental engineering or similar with good process understanding of treatment facilities such as wastewater treatment, landfilling, etc.

Candidates with experience in gas monitoring and methods like flux chambers, eddy covariance, micrometeorological mass balance methods and others will be prioritized.

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The period of employment is 2.5 years. Starting date as soon as possible and according to mutual agreement.

The field research requires mobility and work at various locations in Denmark and possibly elsewhere.
