Postdoc in Synchrotron based X-Ray Microscopy – DTU Physics

Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU)

As a Post Doc, your mission is to conceive, develop and implement x-ray microscopy methods in relation to DFXM. This may involve optics, instrumentation, experiments, complex data analysis and interpretation of results. As the instrument is first-of-its-kind, there are many possible avenues for the study.
DTU and the European Synchrotron Radiation Source (ESRF), have developed a Dark Field X-ray Microscope, DFXM, that can acquire 3D movies of the evolution of the internal structure of crystalline materials (grains, domains, defects, stress fields) during processing – deeply inside mm sized samples. A DFXM microscope has just been implemented at a new beamline ID03. In our center at DTU: “The physics of metal plasticity” we use this microscope to visualize the self-organization of dislocations and domains during deformation. We use the 3D movies to guide and optimise 3D materials simulations. In this way we reveal the physical mechanisms governing the basic mechanical properties, such as strength.

There are many possibilities to improve the spatial resolution and adding new functionality to DFXM. We aim to outstation a post doc from DTU to the beamline at ESRF to spearhead such advances by introduction of new optics and transfer of modalities from electron microscopy. Hence, we are looking for an outstanding and motivated candidate to join our interdisciplinary group, where we combine X-ray physics, simulations of experiments and scientific computing. While part of the DTU team you will be working mainly at the beamline at ESRF. You will also be part of a Danish Center-of-Excellence on hard materials in 3D, SOLID, where you will interact with 15 other PhDs and post docs, all exploiting the latest 3D methods based on large scale x-ray and neutron facilities, within a broad range of fields.

Responsibilities
As a Post Doc, your mission is to conceive, develop and implement x-ray microscopy methods in relation to DFXM. This may involve optics, instrumentation, experiments, complex data analysis and interpretation of results. As the instrument is first-of-its-kind, there are many possible avenues for the study.

Qualifications
You are excited about x-ray physics and advanced data analysis, and we expect that you enjoy being part of a team, that you have sense of humor, is a good problem solver and that you can work efficiently and independently.

For this position we favor candidates with a degree in physics or materials science. You should:

  • Have a solid grasp of x-ray physics
  • Be a skilled experimental scientist
  • Have proven experience with programming, e.g. Python

Previous experience with synchrotron-based science and/or optics an advantage but not required.

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).

Assessment
The assessment of the applications will be made by Professor Henning Friis Poulsen, DTU Physics, Professor Grethe Winther, DTU Construct and Beamline responsible, Carsten Detlefs and Can Yildirm, ESRF.

We offer
DTU is a leading technical university globally recognized for the excellence of its research, education, innovation and scientific advice. We offer a rewarding and challenging job in an international environment. We strive for academic excellence in an environment characterized by collegial respect and academic freedom tempered by responsibility.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The period of employment is 2 years. Starting date is 1 November 2024 (or according to mutual agreement). The position is a full-time position.
