DTU Chemistry at the Technical University of Denmark invites applications for a position as Associate Professor in Theoretical Physical Chemistry with emphasis on computational and quantum chemistry.

The Department of Chemistry at DTU is renowned for its excellence in research, innovation, and education in advanced and applied chemistry within organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry. The department fosters a dynamic and collaborative research environment. Specifically in the Section for Physical Chemistry, there exists a strong focus on theoretical, computational, and femtochemistry. The section is engaged in cutting-edge research that encompasses a detailed quantum mechanical description of molecular structures and reactivity, leveraging extensive computational and analytical methodologies.

We are seeking a highly motivated and talented individual within the area of computational and quantum chemistry to join our Section for Physical Chemistry. We expect you to lead research that pushes the boundaries of understanding molecular systems through theoretical and computational approaches. You have an interest in applying theoretical tools for solving real engineering problems or to supplement existing theoretical and experimental research, e.g. within automatizes synthesis and laboratory robots. Through your commitment you will contribute to the department’s academic mission by providing high-quality undergraduate and graduate teaching, supervising Ph.D. students, and obtaining external research funding.

Responsibilities and qualifications
We are looking for an Associate Professor driven by a desire to actively take part in the promotion, development and improvement of research and education within theoretical physical chemistry with links to both fundamental and applied science.

You are expected to have solid teaching experience and a wish to participate in teaching introductory chemistry as well as physical chemistry at all levels. Furthermore, supervision of postdocs, PhD students, and undergraduate students is expected.

You should be able to:

  • Document a strong profile for research and education.
  • Develop and conduct independent high-quality research in theoretical physical chemistry.
  • Teach and supervise students at the BSc, MSc, and Ph.D. level.
  • Engage in the ongoing development of the department’s academic programs.
  • Collaborate with both academic and industrial research groups internationally and nationally.
  • Publish and disseminate research results in high-impact journals and conferences.
  • Attract external funding.

You should thus have:

  • A strong background in, and an innovative approach to, theoretical physical chemistry relevant for fundamental understanding as well as applications.
  • A proven track record of high-level research in the field of physical chemistry, as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at international conferences.
  • An interest in application-oriented research and industrial collaboration.
  • Experience in applying for and attracting external funding.

You must be responsible for the teaching of courses. DTU employs two working languages: Danish and English. You are expected to be fluent in at least one of these languages, and in time are expected to master both.

As formal qualification you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) as well as academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained by holding an assistant professorship and documented didactic/pedagogic training.

You will be assessed against the responsibilities and qualifications stated above and the following general criteria:

  • Experience and quality of teaching
  • Research experience
  • Research vision and potential
  • International impact and experience
  • Societal impact
  • Innovativeness, including commercialization and collaboration with industry
  • Leadership, collaboration, and interdisciplinary skills
  • Communication skills

Salary and terms of employment

DTU Chemistry is among the internationally leading departments of chemistry within several topics under the main areas: physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, and organic chemistry. The department is responsible for teaching at the BSc, MSc as well as PhD level. The teaching activities are closely related to the active research projects of the department. The research is advanced chemistry ranging from relatively fundamental to almost applied research within chemistry with a polytechnic approach. The purpose is to explore the methods and concepts of modern chemistry which also relate to neighboring fields such as nanotechnology, physics, and biochemistry. Many research projects are aimed at applications within areas such as energy, pharmaceuticals, catalysis, and materials. The research is often performed in close collaboration with Danish and international industry or universities. The Department has approximately 140 employees.

Technology for people
DTU develops technology for people. With our international elite research and study programmes, we are helping to create a better world and to solve the global challenges formulated in the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Hans Christian Ørsted founded DTU in 1829 with a clear mission to develop and create value using science and engineering to benefit society. That mission lives on today. DTU has 13,500 students and 6,000 employees. We work in an international atmosphere and have an inclusive, evolving, and informal working environment.
