External Lecturer – Adaptive Re-Use in Europe: Cities and Buildings – DIS Copenhagen

DIS, Danish Institute for Study Abroad

Join our Danish-American cultural exchange
Each year, more than 4.000 American bachelor students go on exchange in Copenhagen through one of our programmes. DIS’ faculty and staff do our best to make sure they have the time of their life – academically and socially.

But it is not only our students who keep us energized. As a teacher at DIS, you will join an interdisciplinary international network, which brings a special dynamic to our working day that fuels us all.

Adaptive Re-Use in Europe: Citied and Buildings is offered three times per year: one section in the fall term (mid August to mid December) and two sections in the spring term (mid January to mid May). The course load includes 23 lectures (80 minutes each) and 2 Field Studies (4 hours each) per section, plus student evaluation, grading and feedback.

Full teaching responsibility for the course will begin with spring semester, 2025; hopefully the right applicant will be hired in time to “shadow” the current teacher for part of the fall 2024 semester. This shadowing period would be compensated, but not at the same level as when teaching commences in January 2025.

Course Description
Adaptive re-use is an integral component of contemporary design practice in Europe. Conversion of urban areas and old buildings into something better suited for contemporary purposes requires knowledge of our built heritage in the broadest sense. Cultural, site-specific, and material aspects play a key role, as do sustainable strategies for future-proofing our built environment. This course is about the design challenges and the wider economical, sustainable, and political issues at stake when dealing with adaptive re-use.

Read more about the course here and find a link to course syllabus here.

There are so many good reasons to teach at DIS, such as excellent opportunities to:

  • Impact American students/future practicing professionals by sharing European approaches to and best practices for adaptive re-use
  • Work in an international, informal and enthusiastic environment with emphasis on cross-cultural understanding, teamwork, innovation, and adaptability
  • Join our department team of architects, designers, historians and urban thinkers—as well as the broader DIS team of experts in a wide variety of fields
  • Develop interactive, experiential teaching skills and teaching experience in English
  • Expand professional networks in Scandinavia and in the USA

Main tasks and responsibilities as part-time faculty

  • Plan and prepare the course and syllabus prior to the semester start.
  • Teach at DIS Copenhagen two to four times per week. Teaching format includes classroom lectures, experiential learning activities and field studies, especially to visit significant examples of adaptive re-use in Copenhagen.
  • Assess students’ performance, grade assignments and provide feedback to students throughout the course
  • Participate in meetings/workshops aimed to develop pedagogical skills in line with the DIS teaching philosophy. We provide a series of introductory seminars, and you will be paired up with a mentor from our Architecture & Design faculty, whom you can consult for advice and guidance.

Professional competencies

  • Relevant background (architect, interior architect, urban designer, city planner, etc.) and hands-on expertise and experience with adaptive re-use projects.
  • Candidate should be open to pedagogical support from DIS and capable of incorporating DIS’ interactive and hands-on teaching philosophy into teaching practice
  • Experience in creating a structured, interactive and safe learning environment is an advantage
