The Department of Biology at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) in Odense invites applications for a position in the ecological research group starting in March 2025, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The group holds several research grants and advisory projects (to the municipalities as well as to several Ministries) focusing on marine environments and transitional areas (catchment area studies). These projects include the evaluation of aquatic habitats, the planification of actions to improve water/habitat quality and the actual restoration of key marine habitats. Most projects have a specific focus on nutrient cycling, effects of climate adaptation and urban/diffuse discharge on the marine environment and/or the restoration of marine habitats (including site selection tools, project governance and evaluation of ecosystem functionalities).

We seek a marine ecologist and aquatic ecosystem modeler, with excellent scientific and teaching achievements. The candidate should be ground in marine biology, but expertise at the interface between terrestrial and aquatic environments are appreciated (estuaries and coastal meadows). Candidates with skills in environmental modelling of nutrient cycling, water quality and ecosystem functionalities in relation to marine nature restoration will be preferred. The candidate should be able to work in an interdisciplinary team, both withing and outside academia, being able to work and contextualize his/her research in between the different national plans (WFD, Habitat directive and climate adaptation plans) and on collaborative strategic advisory research projects. Experience on stakeholder and citizen science projects are valued. Candidates should have skills in environmental dynamic modelling of nutrient cycling and water quality in aquatic ecosystems. Teaching capabilities in the areas of GIS, environmental modelling and climate adaptation will be necessary.

The candidate will be expected to:

  • Establish and lead his/her own research group, conduct externally funded research of high national and international quality and relevance, as well as to publish research outcomes in National and international peer-reviewed journals and advisory reports.
  • Participate in the Departmental teaching program by contributing to courses including environmental modelling, GIS, technologies, and tools in climate adaptation, as well as develop new relevant undergraduate graduate and continuing education courses.
  • Supervise internship, bachelor, master’s, and PhD projects.
  • Be able to communicate complex scientific findings and well as to co-create and dialogue between a wide range of stake holders, politicians, citizens, ministries etc.
  • Participate in departmental and university service and public outreach and governmental consultancy.
  • It would be preferred an applicant able to communicate and write in both English and Danish.
