Researcher/Data Scientist: Mapping Emerging Polar Blue Carbon Habitats

The Greenland Climate Research Centre at the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources is offering a 24 month Researcher/Data Scientist position with the aim of creating a map of existing and emerging coastal polar blue carbon habitats in the Arctic and Antarctic.
This project is anchored in the POMP-project (https://pomp-project.eu/), a large-scale interdisciplinary project funded by EU-Horizon, investigating the emerging potential of polar ocean habitats to mitigate climate change.
Blue Carbon research so far has primarily focused on temperate and coastal vegetated habitats, however there is a growing global recognition that the retreat of marine ice along the poles could lead to the emergence of particularly valuable habitats along the coasts and open ocean, soaking up additional CO2 from the atmosphere. This could mean that these habitats are especially important for climate change mitigation. Currently there is a lack of knowledge on the location, extent and carbon storage potential of existing blue carbon habitats in polar regions as well as a lack of understanding where these habitats are likely to emerge in future. This project will use a remote sensing approach by ground truthing satellite imagery with existing data along coastal polar habitats in order to map existing blue carbon habitats such as fjords, macroalgal forests, saltmarshes and seagrass meadows. Where possible, dynamics of these habitats will be traced through time and predictions made about the emergence of new blue carbon habitats with continued ice-retreat by linking them to other environmental variables. If desired, the candidate will have the opportunity to carry out fieldwork in some Arctic locations or participate in yearly research cruises around Greenland.
The candidate will be based in Nuuk, Greenland and work as part of an international team within the project with the two closest project partners being the British Antarctic Survey and the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research.

We are looking for a self-motivated, enthusiastic individual to join our team with the following skill set:

  • Hold a Masters or equivalent in a related discipline, with a strong background in computing
  • Experience applying one or more programming languages to construct processing workflows, such as retrieving, processing and analysis of satellite images
  • Good working knowledge of QGIS, ArcGIS or GRASS GIS
  • A minimum of 3 years coding experience in R/Python
  • Experience with working with large datasets
  • Experience with spatial modelling
  • Experience extracting data from global databases
  • Knowledge on carbon estimation

The position is available from the start of 2025

The Greenland Institute of Natural Resources is situated in Nuuk, Greenland providing a hub of scientific expertise in the Arctic with an abundance of available research infrastructure and a wide range of collaborators across the Arctic Nations. The Greenland Climate Research Centre in particular consists of an international and multidisciplinary team focusing on different aspects of how climate change manifests in the Arctic ecosystem and its consequences for the Greenlandic society.
Salary and terms of employment:
The salary terms and conditions are specified by the agreement between the Government of Greenland and the employees’ negotiating partners (salary agreement for academics in Greenland).
The successful applicant will be based in Nuuk at the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources full time.
The position will refer to the Head of Department of the Greenland Climate Research Centre.
