Software Developer for Atomic-Scale Materials Simulations – DTU Physics

The CAMD section at DTU Physics is looking for 1-2 outstanding code designer and programmer to develop and maintain our materials simulation software suite.
Would you like to take a leading role in advancing the materials modeling software suite developed in the CAMD section at DTU Physics?

The section for Computational Atomic-scale Materials Design (CAMD) at DTU-Physics is seeking an outstanding scientific software developer within the area of atomic-scale materials simulations. In this position you will be part of a code development team comprising both permanent staff members as well as post docs and PhD students and will have responsibilities related to code development/maintenance as well as to support of users and less experienced code developers at CAMD.

About CAMD
The CAMD section comprises four professors and their research groups, one permanent code developer, and a supercomputer manager. We offer an international and scientifically stimulating working environment at the Department of Physics, DTU. The section is strongly committed to open-source software and complies to the FAIR data principles. CAMD develops the Python based electronic structure code GPAW, the Atomic Simulation Environment (ASE), the TaskBlaster workflow framework, as well as other open source software projects and materials databases. In addition, CAMD hosts and manages the DTU-supercomputer facility Niflheim.

Your role at CAMD
As a scientific software developer at CAMD you will have a critical role in sustaining the existing code base and data infrastructures and for defining the future directions for these. The work will include development and maintenance of the GPAW code and the ASE library, support and guidance of users and less experienced code developers, engagement in relevant local and international activities (meetings, schools, workshops, etc.). You will help students and postdocs in the group with their code related issues and you will thereby be involved in ongoing scientific projects. You will meet students, postdocs, and other stakeholders with an open, helpful, and constructive attitude. While you will have a large degree of independence in your daily work, the overall direction and focus of your work is ultimately decided by the CAMD faculty members.

Key responsibilities
Basically, your job will be totake leading responsibility in the development and maintenance of the CAMD software suite, including GPAW and ASE. Furthermore, you should contribute to an open and user/student friendly environment where you assist and guide users (internal and external) of the CAMD software packages and contribute to the organization of code sprints and hackathons.

  • We are looking for a profile who has/is: Outstanding and well documented Python programing skills
  • Experience with development of software for GPU architectures
  • Experience with development of ab initio electronic structure methodology
  • Experience with automated workflow software
  • A PhD in computational materials science or a related area
  • A strong motivation to work in a team
  • Service minded and motivated by helping and guiding others
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) you will be employed as AC Specialist.
