In the Global Legal & Patents organisation we are currently looking for a VP for Litigation who will be responsible for driving key litigations and government investigations at a global matrix level.

About the department
The Global Legal and Patents organisation, part of the EVP area Finance, Legal & Global Solutions, is responsible for managing legal risks and opportunities in Novo Nordisk and for driving the global legal strategy.

The VP for Litigations has corporate responsibility for the strategic management of litigations, government investigations, mediations and settlement processes globally.

The job
As our Vice President for Litigation, you will report to the Group General Counsel and will lead a dedicated team of attorneys (litigators) and project managers, driving the global legal and patents strategy also serving as a member of Global Legal Leadership Team.

You will be responsible to manage key complex global litigations and investigations, set strategic direction for cross-border litigation, government investigations, mediations and settlement processes, cross-organisational projects worldwide, including critical legal risk reporting and the oversight of Novo Nordisk’s global strategic external legal service providers.

Main responsibilities of the role are:

  • Manage global litigations : Develop and execute strategy for global litigations and investigations (e.g., patent litigation, securities class action, antitrust, product liability, litigations and investigations relating to marketing practices to protect the company’s competitive position and key assets), incl. develop case strategies and define key deliverables based on input from internal and external stakeholders (incl. external counsel and experts) to ensure NN’s strategic interests and key assets are safeguarded; Ensure progress according to defined strategies; Provide informed cost benefit analysis when identifying risks; and select and recommend alternative methods of dispute resolution, when appropriate;
  • Management of external providers: Manage external providers, incl. external counsel, e-discovery and managed review providers, experts, consultants, etc. as relevant in development of case strategies, key deliverables, and execution of same; Ensure cases are appropriately staffed; Challenge outside counsel expenses and time management; Develop and manage budgets, incl. present draft budgets to and follow up with CFO and Global General Counsel for endorsement;
  • Identify and mitigate key risks : Drive pre-litigation projects aimed at assessing and mitigating key litigation risks (e.g. patent infringement preparedness projects)
  • Manage cross-organizational projects , incl. developing tools and best practices: Drive functional development projects, incl. develop and share best practices;
  • Leadership : Hire, train, mentor, coach, empower and motivate the team to perform at the highest standard, ensuring progress according to defined strategies; Effectively lead the team to meet NN’s goals, consistent with the NN Way.

Qualifications
We are looking for an ambitious and proactive colleague who can contribute to the team both professionally and personally. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in most of the following skills and experiences:

  • Law degree from a highly rated Institution;
  • Admitted in at least one jurisdiction;
  • In-house experience and experience from Pharma/biotech or a similar highly regulated industry;
  • Law firm Experience highly desirable;
  • Timely completion of all continuing legal education (CLE) requirements to maintain attorney status;
  • 10+ years of global legal experience (preferably with cross-border litigation); Patent litigation experience preferred;
  • Used to working in close collaboration with high-level executives (e.g. members of senior management and external lawyers/advisors);
  • Extensive legal experience from group companies operating globally (i.e. across many jurisdictions and with different cultures);
  • Fluent in English, both written and spoken.
