Postdoctoral position in research project on organizational wrongdoing in purpose-driven organizations

Aarhus Universitet (AU)

The Department of Management at Aarhus BSS, Aarhus University, invites applications for a 3 year (32 month) fulltime postdoctoral position, offering applicants an exciting opportunity to join a new research project on fraud in purpose driven organizations. The project is directed by Assistant Professor Dr. Sebastian Oelrich.

The starting date is expected to be 1 October 2024 or subject to mutual agreement. Upon mutual agreement, the position can also be converted into a part-time position.
The research project
The position is part of the project “Too good to be bad? Fraud and corruption in purpose-driven organizations” funded by an AUFF Grant. While forms of organizational wrongdoing in profit-driven organizations (e.g., Enron, WorldCom, or Wirecard) are well explored, less is known about such wrongdoing in and by purpose-driven organizations. These types of organizations usually aim to benefit disadvantaged segments of populations, target neglected societal issues, and satisfy unmet needs in local communities. Here, fraud is often overlooked by stakeholders and researchers alike due to normative assumptions that they are ‘too good to be bad.’ Drawing and critically reflecting on fraud theories, this research project aims to develop and test theory on wrongdoing in purpose-driven organizations.

The project will utilize a multi-method approach. To develop theory, we conduct
interviews and utilize case studies with purpose-driven organizations and
convicted individuals. Second, surveys in these organizations are used to understand the phenomenon under real-life circumstances. Third, experiments are used to test interventions, isolate effects, and establish causality.

The project is expected to generate high-quality research, targeting 4 and 4* peer-reviewed journals in Accounting and Organization Studies.
Job description
The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the overall objectives of the project by being involved in developing, designing, coordinating, and conducting studies within the project and contribute to the other phases of the research process, including data analysis, writing, and publishing articles.

Research will primarily be carried out in collaboration with Assistant Professor Dr. Sebastian Oelrich and other project members, but there will be opportunities to pursue independent work within the overall focus of the project. The project offers significant funding for data collection, research assistants, travel, and workshops.

The successful applicant will be part of a cutting-edge research project and a vibrant, supportive research team with an informal atmosphere, including the Center for Accounting and the ODA section which offer particularly rich engagements with colleagues. There will be excellent opportunities for intellectual development and mentoring, as well as developing an independent research agenda within the context of the project. Focus is also placed on how the candidate can make use of the postdoctoral position to develop their own career.

The position is research-oriented but may involve teaching assignments. Salary is according to the Danish pay schedule.
Your Qualifications
The successful candidate for the postdoctoral position should hold (or be close to completing) a PhD relevant to the academic areas of the Department of Management, preferably within one of the following areas: Accounting, Business Ethics, Social Entrepreneurship, Psychology, or a related field.

In addition to a keen interest in conducting collaborative research within the project of fraud and corruption in purpose driven organizations, the successful candidate must demonstrate ambition and ability to produce high-quality research in the area(s) of Accounting, Business Ethics, Social Entrepreneurship, or Psychology. Very good communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team are essential qualities.

Candidates should have research experience on (one of) the topic(s) of organizational wrongdoing (e.g., fraud, corruption, or unethical behaviors), whistleblowing, purpose-driven organizations, or related phenomena. Methodologically, candidates should hold strong quantitative (esp. experimental) and/or qualitative skills, demonstrated through their research output.

Applicants are expected to have an excellent command of spoken and written English.

Teaching experience in the area of management and/or financial accounting is an asset.

As part of your application, you should choose one of your publications that you believe speaks to the research project the best. This could be an unpublished chapter of your dissertation, a working paper, or a published article. Please mention in your cover letter why you think this is the case. Also see the application procedure section for more information of what you need to include in your application.
