DTU invites applications for a position as professor in Marine Biodiversity. The position is affiliated with the National Institute of Aquatic Resources (DTU Aqua) and is based at the institute’s locality in Kgs. Lyngby.

The professor is expected to lead the research field of marine biodiversity including how the function, structure, and stability of natural marine ecosystems are impacted by various anthropogenic and natural stressors.

Responsibilities and qualifications

The professor is expected to lead research on community level marine biodiversity, from plankton to mammals, with a central focus on fish. A key focus is how biodiversity varies in space and time, and how it influences the functions of marine ecosystems.

The goal is to describe how external pressures, including fisheries and climate change, impact biodiversity and ecosystem function. The research is expected to bridge from fundamental research towards improvement of the scientific advice regarding the impact of stressors on marine ecosystem dynamics.

Employment requires research at high international level within marine biodiversity that crosses between classical marine ecology, statistics and machine learning. It requires a track record in research leadership, including visionary strategic development, building up an interdisciplinary research group.

Furthermore, we require a proven track record in attracting external research funding, coordination of national and international initiatives within the research field, and contribution to university-level teaching, including PhD students and post doc supervision.

The research field and working area include:

  • Understanding the role of biodiversity for ecosystem function, stability, and resilience towards external perturbations, including human stressors and climate change.
  • Collation of existing regional data sources into cross-regional and global “big data” sets.
  • Application of modern statistical and machine learning techniques on big biodiversity data sets
  • Teaching within marine ecology and biodiversity
  • Engagement in international advisory functions regarding marine biodiversity and the ecosystem effects of fishery and other maritime activities

DTU employs two working languages: Danish and English. You are expected to be fluent in at least one of these languages, and in time are expected to master and teach/supervise in both.

You will be assessed against the responsibilities and qualifications stated above and the following general criteria:

  • Research impact and experience, funding track record and research vision
  • International impact and experience
  • Documented experience and quality of teaching and curriculum development
  • Societal impact
  • Innovativeness, including commercialization and collaboration with industry
  • Leadership, collaboration, and interdisciplinary skills
  • Communication skills

Salary and terms of employment
