Description
Platform and System AIV Engineer in the Ground Software Systems and Functional Verification Section, Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality (D/TEC).

You will work within the Ground Software Systems and Functional Verification Section, a group of around 25 highly motivated experts in ground software engineering and assembly, integration and functional verification (AIV) for space systems. The Section contributes to the success of ESA missions such as Rosetta, Galileo, Juice, Earth observation Sentinel missions, meteorological missions and many others. You will represent the Agency and provide technical support for the functional verification and validation of the space segment for all missions and satellites at ESA.

You will also potentially support space transportation, space engineering and technology, operations and space safety missions.

The Section is also responsible for defining, initiating and managing technology research and development (R&D) activities in the domain to ensure that future missions use state-of-the-art technologies in an efficient manner. It also participates actively in standardisation activities by influencing the evolution of the various applicable standards and ensuring they are properly adhered to in ESA projects.

Duties
You will report to the Head of the Ground Software Systems and Functional Verification Section. One of the Section’s key activities is to provide assembly, integration and test (AIT) support to ESA programmes. It is also the focal point for the development of avionic test benches, EGSE and the database reference facilities of the Avionic System Laboratory.

Your duties will include:

  • working within ESA project teams, together with satellite and instrument system engineers, providing specialist technical support for assembly, integration and test as well as functional verification and validation, including for ground software and the corresponding development and validation facilities, specifically simulators;
  • participating in the evaluation of industrial proposals and in project reviews;
  • providing technical support during launch campaigns, ensuring spacecraft readiness and compliance with mission requirements;
  • facilitating the coordination and execution of test campaigns, aligning with the System Integration and Verification Plan;
  • collaborating with the Product Assurance team to address and resolve Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) arising from tests;
  • managing verification information and ensuring traceability between system design and verification documentation.

For technology activities, you may be called in to:

  • participate in the definition and execution of the research activities in the domain of the Section, in particular relating to methods and tools to improve the development and verification process of future missions;
  • contribute to the dissemination of the results of activities performed and knowledge transfer across the Agency.

Technical competencies
Experience in functional verification and validation activities

Proven experience in AIT and/or AIV and satellite-level functional, performance and environmental tests

Background and experience in verification and validation facilities, real-time simulation and test facilities, EGSE, SCOE or front ends

Experience with space engineering standards and their implementation

Experience in managing and monitoring industrial activities, including participation in reviews, would be considered an asset

Spacecraft systems and space system engineering knowledge

Education
A master's degree in a relevant domain is required for this post.

In principle, recruitment will be within the advertised grade band (A2-A4). However, if the selected candidate has less than four years of relevant professional experience following the completion of the master’s degree, the position may be filled at A1 level.
